Okay, I'm as much of a feedback whore as anyone, but I had to laugh my ass off at the e-mail in my mailbox this morning.

Over on BAPS, Alane has consistently posted AtS Season 5 DVD reviews. One review from some website (beats the hell out of me what it was) spent half the AtS review complaining about the way that Spike took over BtVS (tm). My response -- ON BAPS -- was that the guy sounded like a complete ass.

Well, apparently the guy must also be a bit of a feedback whore because he wrote me defending his review and saying he wasn't an ass.

Now, if I had, you know, ever visited the website where he had written the review, maybe I could see his writing me (though that would have been an odd case of tracking IPs). Had I ever written to him, I could see his writing to me. Had I even posted my response on a public usenet newsgroup, I could see him writing to me (though wouldn't a post be a more appropriate response?).

However, I had posted the "What an ASS!" comment on a Spike Redemptionist yahoo group!

The guy got so upset that I had a 3 sentence response on a yahoogroup that he personally wrote to me.

Dude, how needy of validation are you? Do you take it personally when radom people who have never written to you take exception to your reviews? So much so that you e-mail someone who never went to your website or ever wrote to you?! Or am I to think he didn't seek out the BAPS's responses? Not like they were posted on HIS website. What? This guy who frothed about how Spike "took over BtVS"tm belonged to a Spike Redemptionist group? I don't think so!

Or did he just google his own damn name yesterday to see if anyone had spoken about him ANYWHERE on the web?

However he sought out the post, (and he really had to seek it out, follow a link, something) *snicker* He then got offended that a totally random person thought that he came off as an ass. . . and he WROTE HER --er... me-- to complain about my reaction to his review!

LOL! I couldn't even think of a coherent response for him other than "Dude! Did you google your name? How in the hell did you see my post in the first place?"

(Should I google my name to see if one of my Duckie insults wound up on a Duck board? Then should I be upset if they didn't *gasp* like my insulting ducks? Perhaps I should write the Duck and be all aghast that she/he/it would think I'm an ass. *snicker*)

Next, my e-mail will be filled with responses from Ace, Sep, Ms Alli, Marti, James Reilly, and Megan McTavish.

... and I really need to can the Hurley-speak.

Most web stats packages give you a "referer" stat. That is, you can see what sites are linking to you. I know when I see a sudden spike in hits from one site, I usually go look and see what they said when they rec'd me. I would guess that if Alane posted a link on BAPS, he probably got several hundred hits that all tracked back to BAPS. Not such a stretch that he'd go look and see what had been said about his site.

So if posting a review on a website, following the link to another website that happens to be a members only posting board, he chooses to privately email someone who didn't like his review (but who had never gone to his website or written to him?)

*Snort* Doesn't make the board look like a bit, or professional, affair becuase I really can't imagine a professional reviewer going through the links to find people who disagreed with their review on an entirely separate site, and then privately e-mailing them!

If anything it made me feel even more dismissive of him. Someone who was just doing a job wouldn't be trolling an entirely separate site reading the responses and privately mailing people back.

Still strikes me as hilariously needy.

Wha-huh? My response doesn't even appear comprehensible to me. Did LJ mangle it or did I?

Wonder if I was distracted while writing it. Sorry, for the incomprehensibility of my response. Blame me, LJ, or sleep deprivation. :)

Heh -- I usually don't read BAPs but now I'm going to have to dig through my messages and find this guy's review. I wonder if I called him and ass if he would email me?

Hey, that makes ME want to go leave a comment on BAPS that he's an ass. Imagine!! I personally like the CHANCE review that said that James Marsters was the best thing that happened to Buffy/Angel.

Heh. Dunno. And now I wish that I had written a more thoughtful response illustrating how it's utterly impossible to argue that Spike "took over BtVS" (tm) in his 2 scenes an episode. :)

Instead I only wrote a snippy response about the guy having issues with regard to the Buffster and that he came off as being an ass.

Though, I think the poor guy might get a swelled head when looking to see that the thread has continued for 4 days now. Of course discussion of his actual review ceased...um...4 days ago. The subject line still remaining on the board is just the result of discussion drift.

Heh! I liked that review as well. And I also liked the author of the upcoming Spike comic's position that Angel's and Spike's revenge on the Immortal is to leave the guy to Buffy's not-so-tender "mercies." Now, that is a comment I can agree with.

My guess is that Buffy is probably in a bad mood, since Spike was alive and he didn't come and see her, so I'm guessing the Immortal is getting the shit kicked out of him.

Poor chap! His feelings must be so very easily hurt.

:Goes away to snicker some more:

His review was stupid and he IS an ass.

And still I snicker.

Doesn't it strike the guy that he wrote a nasty review of someone's work and it quite proud of it. But when someone does the same to him he takes it all quite personally and goes out and responds. Snicker How would he have liked it if Joss and/or JM had written to HIM personally explaining how the entire Spike arc was really brilliant?

But somehow, I don't believe the guy would get the irony.

Really, to go back and personally respond by e-mail to someone who never wrote you in the first place? Sheesh. It is funny though.

Yes. His review was ass. But I do find it funny that this guy posts his own (wrongheaded and stupid) opinions about someone else's work on his site. But when someone else does the same to HIS work, he tracks down their e-mail address and responds.

Wonder how he'd react if Joss and/or JM wrote him? Bet he'd be all self righteous about his right to have his opinion.

But, really, this is just funny. 1) Why should he care what in the hell I think? 2) What makes him think that I give a damn what HE thinks or why he thinks it?

Silly boy.

I don't want to know all the gory details, becuase I already know that I don't respect this guy's opinion at all, but I wondered what was the overall tone of his email? All hurt and self-righteous? Angry? Trying to make you see how wrong you were?

Doing something this ridiculous suggests someone whose ego is very easily bruised.

Wish Joss would write to him, but doubt he cares one way or the other any more.

And your name actually shows up in a TON of places. I was bored one day a year or so ago and googled the names of several friends, including yours... you are all over the place on the web!

Well, in the guy's defense, I once responded to someone who posted a criticism on my S6 review on another board--but that was mainly because he said I couldn't possibly be a real lesbian because no real lesbian could possibly be a Spike fan. I told him that if he wanted, I'd send him a photo of my unshaven legs to prove it...
