Still, I always liked that Berestan Selmy tested Dany's character before deciding to reveal himself and swear loyalty.

Yeah, as it stands now, he would have kept serving Joffrey if J. hadn't kicked him out (which always made me side-eye Barristan a bit in the books!) and if Viserys were still alive, he would have bent the knee to him? Because that's what I was getting from the "I am loyal to Targaryens" speech. He doesn't KNOW anything about Dany; maybe she's as crazy as Aerys!

Also, I didn't think Tywin was pontificating so much as eviscerating Tyrion with his words. Poor Tyrion - and did you notice "The Rains of Castamere" played over the end of that scene? Wonderful touch!
