Game of Thrones topped Thursday's Primetime Emmy nominations with 19, followed by Fargo with 18 and American Horror Story: Coven with 17.

Thrones will duke it out for drama series against reigning champ Breaking Bad,Downton Abbey, House of Cards, four-time champ Mad Men and True Detective.

True Detective, which opted to enter the drama race instead of miniseries, became the first show in 12 years to nab double nods in the lead actor category. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson will go up against three-time champ Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), reigning champ Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom), Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Kevin Spacey (House of Cards). Hamm, who's currently tied with Martin Sheen, Hugh Laurie and Michael C. Hall, would become the category's biggest loser (0-7) if he loses.

In comedy, Modern Family will try to duplicate Frasier's five-peat in the series race. It's up against The Big Bang Theory, Louie, Orange Is the New Black, Silicon Valley and Veep.

The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Seth Meyers, will air Monday, Aug. 25 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC.

The Good Wife was the best drama series on television this year, and it can't even get a nomination? The Emmys are crappy.

Doesn't matter. Breaking Bad will win. (I don't even watch Breaking Bad, but you can tell it's the industry fave. It'll win.)

Outraged on Tatiana Maslaney's behalf. What does a girl gotta do to get nominated?

I think that the Emmy always discriminates science fiction. They never nominated John Noble for Fringe for the same reasons, I think. Only "serious" shows get considered.

Which is why Game of Thrones is so remarkable, I guess. Maybe Orphan Black just needs more blood and boobies.

It's embarassing that Tatiana Maslaney wasn't nominated and there are women from Downton Abbey (The last season was ridiculous, frankly. And I love DA and Michelle Dockery as much as the next person. But Maslany fucking plays ALL THE CHARACTERS! And she's doing a better job that ED in Dollhouse)

It's admittedly hard to take The Emmys seriously - considering that the voters and nominators don't watch all the series and only see the submitted reels. Also the rules are wonky. I think it's a panel that reviews and decides.

That said...

Why did they nominate Downton Abbey again? It was horrid this season. I can think of at least three series that were better, one that I don't even watch.

And it'll either be Breaking Bad or True Detective. Fargo has the miniseries, and Orange is the New Black has the comedy category. Game of Thrones and Mad Men don't have a chance.

Game of Thrones isn't your typical fantasy/genre series - for a couple of reasons. 1) it's on HBO, 2) it doesn't emphasize the fantasy all that much, you can watch it and forget it's fantasy...

That's why a lot of people who despise fantasy - love Game of Thrones, both the books and the series. Because it's basically a medieval war story that has fantasy elements. As opposed to a fantasy series that has medieval war elements.

There are a couple of genre series that have jumped into the mainstream and got emmy nods: X-Files also comes to mind. It's inclusion way back when was actually more surprising than Game of Thrones was.

I remain baffled that AHS and DA get so many nominations, particularly AHS.

I'm glad to see Fargo get so many nods (it was freakin' awesome)--and it's gonna be a tough, tough choice between Martin Freeman & Billy Bob, both of whom knocked it out of the part -- but I definitely join in with the outrage on the part of Tatiana Maslaney.
