Sleepy Hollow?
Dec. 2nd, 2014 09:49 amSophomore slump. This has not been good.
Katrina/Ichabod is a chemistry black hole. Katrina is a 'Riley' (uninteresting lump blocking my view of more engaging characters).
Too little Jenny and Irving. Way too little.
And I suppose Irvingis gonna go the DeadAndy route. Or rather (my prediction) is going to be the third Horseman of the Apocalypse.
Show needs to regroup, bringing back the fun and focusing on the team which had chemistry rather than a 'starcrossed' couple no one gives a flip about. Give it up, show. No matter how you doggedly bang the drum, Ichabod/Katrina is not going to be a thing. Just... nope.

Date: 2014-12-02 04:40 pm (UTC)And I think your prediction about Irving is correct.
I have heard that they're planning on focusing on Abbie/Crane in the back half of the season, so hopefully that's true. And I really hope we get more Ichabod/motorcycle.

Yep.

Date: 2014-12-03 02:14 am (UTC)This is an odd series - in that it's amongst the few in which I prefer the episodic or stand-a-lone episodes to the arc, unless it deals specifically with Abby and Jenny and/or Irving's backstory. I also really like the Smuggler who has a thing for Abby - now they do have chemistry. Abby has chemistry with everyone.
Unfortunately Icabode does not.
Katrina is not working for me. She's just not that interesting - I actually found Riley Finn more interesting. She's on, I'm bored.
And Henry..is rapidly becoming a moustach twirling villain - not nearly as interesting as Nobel's villain in Fringe.

Date: 2014-12-03 03:18 am (UTC)Apart from the fact that this is mega-insulting to Nicole Beharie and Lyndie Greenwood, Katia Winter is an utterly crap actress and her character is boring beyond belief. EVERYTHING grinds to a halt when she's onscreen. Comparing her to Riley is apt, but even more apt is comparing her to the only other completely annoying, useless, shoehorned-in, reviled yet doggedly retained female TV character within recent memory: Lori from The Walking Dead. When they finally killed her off it was a cause for celebration throughout the internets.
There are lots of problems with SH, but the biggest, most glaring one is the continued existence of Katrina. After that comes the continued existence of Henry (shut UP already, you nit!), and turning the scary-ass Headless Horseman into the candy-ass mewling idiot Abraham (both of their transformations in service of the awful Katrina, too).
I'll watch the first episode when it comes back whenever, but if it doesn't improve almost immediately, I'm done.

Date: 2014-12-03 08:12 pm (UTC)Yeah. And then there's Hawley. I'm just not sure what the point of him is. It's like the show is getting too caught up on potential romance angles to remember that it was better as a wacky adventure.
Also, I think the season would have been better served if it was as short as S1.

I have heard that they're planning on focusing on Abbie/Crane
Jebus I hope so. No one gives a crap about the Crane marriage!

Date: 2014-12-03 11:06 pm (UTC)And last night's mid-season finale only really worked in relation to Irving.
Every minute of Cranes arguing about their relationship is terrible. Seriously, I got more entertainment bout of Crane's psycho-ghost ex than any moment of Katrina/Ichabod. They just don't work. Not on any level.

Date: 2014-12-03 11:08 pm (UTC)I don't even bother with the 'she's useless' aspect (though it's true). It's that she's wooden and a chemistry heat sink. Even things which should work (demon baby plot... though it's a hella sexist plot) don't work because she's not a good actress and devoid of chemistry with co-stars such that co-stars also become less interesting in scenes with her.

Date: 2014-12-04 03:47 am (UTC)I can't quite decide if it is the actress, the writing, or a combination of both?
Having just watched the Mama episode...the acting and direction is admittedly not great ...smuggler guy, who I actually like (yes, I have fictional male character type - right down to blue eyes and blond hair), looked bewildered 98% of the time. Damn. And he showed so much potential.
Jenny, Irving and Abby do a lot with very little.
But what drug it down? the damn baby plot. I kept wanting to fast-forward.
I already know where they are headed with it. I know they are doing it to emphasize Katrina's mother issues...or rather Henry's mother issues - it's more about Henry than Katrina, which may be the problem. She's sort of a non-character - existing solely to bolster Icabode, Headless and Henry's storylines - which happens a lot with women in horror tales. However, Jenny and Abby at least counter-act it to a degree. Sleepy Hollow seems to have an identity crisis - it's trying to be two things at once. There's the strong Abby/Jenny feminist slant, and the somewhat chauvinistic and at times offensive Katrina/Headless/Crane/Henry slant. I'm wondering if they are supposed to be commenting on each other? Katrina is deliberately written as Abraham (headless), Henry, and Crane's fantasy - an object for them to adore, but nothing seen beneath? Not we see her mainly through their perspectives. When she was with Abby - she was actually somewhat interesting. Hmm...I've managed somehow, against my will, to justify what the dang writers are doing with Katrina. LOL! This is what happens when I've had too much honey. (been baking for a bake sale on Sat.)
