ARGGGGGHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Apr. 6th, 2010 12:35 pmArrggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! {deep breath} Arrrrrggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
So, the internet problem I was having a couple of weeks ago? Back x10.
Last night, just like a couple of weeks ago, my computer could not log onto the internet. Nothing I did worked. It would say that it had found the internet and was (by its indication) working fine... but... no internet. I changed cables again. Nada. So... I finally concluded that my wireless router had finally died (it had been threatening to for a while.) Well, crap. But not the end of the world, right? I could a) buy a new wireless router or b) get one through my cable company.
I decided to do the second because they have a bundling special right now that if I took the TV/Internet/DVR/Phone bundle (complete with router) it's actually less than my current bill with TV/Internet/DVR + AT&T Phone. So, fine. I agree to bundle. It actually (for 1yr anyway) takes my current cable/TV bill down by about $20 and that will include phone, so I lose my additional phone bill entirely. So, good. Same services, less money. I'm happy.
Except they came to install wireless today and... my computer STILL won't sign on. My computer will pick up my neighbors wireless, but the Dell Network Assistant in my computer is clogging up the works and the cable guy couldn't manually install because my ethernet port won't work (I knew that. The thing hasn't worked in years. But, hey, they have wireless, so it didn't need to). So using my mom's laptop (quick call to parents, and Dad drove it over) and wireless is actually installed... just won't work on my computer... which still refuses to acknowledge it. And Mom was sweet enough to be the one there when the cable guy came, so I'm not at home. And I might (emphasis on the might) be able to make it work as I'm used to the tempermental old laptop, but trying to explain to cable guy or mom is pointless. So I have new, functioning wireless awaiting me at home... and a computer which seemingly can't find it. So I told mom to call the guys who I"ve used to fix her computer and see how much it would cost to fix the ethernet port. (Because it is broken and would make my life easier if it worked) and it's $40 to look at it well north of that to a) replace it or b) take a chance that they can fix it without replacing it. ) I said I wouldn't spend more than around $125 because, honestly, what's the point? Buggy old laptop fix for over $120+ dollars when you can buy a brand spanking new, better than what I have now for $750 with year no interest financing? Would be silly to waste too much money in fixing. And, honestly, I don't want to even pay the $40 looksee if it's something I could easily fix myself.
So... I have newly installed wireless at home and a prospect of either messing with trying to get it up and running (again!) all evening in a fit of irritation... or having to break down and spend more money buying a new computer when honestly I was hoping to eek another year out of this one. *sign*
But, let's be honest, I can't live without internet (it would kill me!) so I have to do SOMETHING.
So, first up... another incredibly frustrating evening on seeing if I can coax my computer into working. :(
ETA: Success! I know my buggy old computer better than cable-guy does, so I have managed to make it work!
