Jul. 12th, 2012 10:52 amSo Penn State's internal investigation re: the Sandusky case is out... and is horrifying.
I have a great deal of sympathy with Penn State Alumni with regard to the horror all of this must engender.
Like Penn State, I live in an area where an iconic football coach is considered just shy of being God. In fact, that's a really common joke in the area. It's freezing when Auburn won the national championship? Bear must have spoken to God that hell should freeze over. The blocked field goal against Tennessee that allowed us to go to the national championship? Bear Bryant must've put a good word in for us with God. That sort of thing.
So I do 'get' what Paterno represents to Penn Staters, and I sympathize with the godawful pain fans and alumni must feel (meanwhile, Florida State's Bobby Bowden is thanking his stars that the only thing his legacy is tarnished with is having lost some games and a little bit of grade fixing ). But this is deeply, truly, horrific and AWFUL.

From the report on the Internal Handling of convicted child molestor Sandusky:
"It specifically names late head football coach Joe Paterno as being complicit in hiding Sandusky's crimes, along with former school president Graham Spanier, athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz. According to the report, Spanier, Curley, Schultz and Paterno "repeatedly concealed critical facts" about Sandusky's rampage from the Board of Trustees, the Penn State community, and the general public. They also displayed, in Freeh's words, a "total disregard for the safety and welfare of Sandusky’s child victims."

" According to a timeline in the report, all four men knew about a 1998 shower incident involving Sandusky and Victim 6 (which is now confirmed to have happened, per the grand jury presentment). They did not limit his access to the football facilities at any point during the investigation. No entry was made in the crime log about the incident, and the board of trustees was never notified. "
