Death Comes to Pemberly
Nov. 3rd, 2014 12:24 pmOkay, I have a bit of bitching about this BBC/Masterpiece production:
* Okay, given their child's age being only 5 (and reading somewhere that this was to take place only 6 years post Pride and Prejudice) why did Lizzie Bennet Darcy look like a dowdy 40 year old? Lizzie would've been in her 20s. 30 at most. And if the child is 5 she's been hella wealthy for close to 6 years, and yet she couldn't find a single solitary flattering dress?! It was her younger sister who was the dowdy one. I know Lizzie was never supposed to be as beautiful as Jane, but she wasn't dowdy either. And, here is the major sticking point, she had no humor! She had no sparkle. Lizzie Bennet need not be drop dead lovely, but she's supposed to have a twinkle in her eye and a sense of amusement at the antics that around her. Not only was this Lizzie Bennet Darcy dowdy, she was also dull. Lizzie Bennet is not dull! This just seemed badly cast (and not only because Jennifer Ehle will forever and always be the picture of Elizabeth Bennet in my headcanon)
* Erm... was I supposed to root for Wickham to not be hanged? It seems like I was supposed to have some sort of emotion about that, but honestly, this Wickham had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out why Darcy would WANT to try to save him. I 'get' the "Darcys want to avoid scandal" deal. But...well... that's out the window any way you look at it. And, honestly, it's not like Wickham's ruin would directly impact those closely related to Darcy (the closest connection being Elizabeth's sister. And, honestly, just play it off as Lydia being a total idiot...because she is (though I did like Dr. Who's companion giving Lydia a tiny bit of self awareness.)
*And I recognized the actress playing Georgianna from something, somewhere but it still bugs the crap out of me that I cannot think from what.
