So in TVGuide's Ask Ausiello column, they claimed that what happened last night was the plan the entire time.
And that Michelle R. had always only had a one year contract.  Also that after the DUI they had considered changing the story to Ana living instead of dying because of what people would say.  No word on Cynthia Watros situation until next week.
So thoughts?  Feelings?  Do we believe or disbelieve?

I don't believe them for a second. The show had only four single women in the cast (not counting Rousseau, who only rarely appears). I can't imagine that they planned all along to kill half of them in one scene, given the inherent difficulties of introducing new characters in this setting.

True. I tend to think it's a cumlative thing where they probably had a one year contract with an option for renewal. Then ther was the Ana backlash early in the season. The DUI, the reports of difficulty to work with (that being either MR was difficult to work with or that the producers are difficult to work with. Take you choice), Disney/Touchstone/ABC touchiness and basically they had plenty of possible motives.

Still, seems a bit too obvious to off the characters simultaneously.

(And really, can't they discover Sayid's Nadia somewhere on the island? HER I liked).

Heh.

Yeah, but do you CARE. That's sort of what I boil down to. I never really cared enough about Ana Lucia to do more than shrug. They had better keep their killing hands off of Locke, Sawyer, Sun, Jin, Hurley, and Mr. Eko though. (Actually, they may off Mr. Eko and that would be sad).

Well, I care in the sense that I'm really, really happy. Which is probably not what you meant *g*, but I hated her. Hated the character and thought the actress was terrible. And they can kill Mr. Eko, too, for all I care. I like my original survivors and found the whole intro of Group 2 (Bernard included) a jarring waste of time, though at least Libby may be of interest 'cuz of the whole Hurley/nuthouse connection. But frankly, give me my original cast, who are the ones I'm emotionally invested in, and ditch the rest.

For once I'm glad for the Joss philosophy: have sex and then you die.

At least he didn't make Sawyer part of the body count.

And woot, no more AL. To bad, so sad.

Yeah, that's definitely a big part of it. I noticed last night that it was only really the original players that I'm deeply invested in. Though I do like Eko as well.

Heh. I'm pretty sure that until contract negotiations come around "Sawyer" "Locke" and "Hurley" are all safe. They wouldn't dare kill them off (until money makes it look like an attractive option).

Well, they'd just better watch the body count. I didn't care about Boone, Shannon, Ana Luisa, Libby and Henry (if Michael killed him too), so I had no problem with that. But if they kill any more of the original cast, it may also kill my interest in the show.

I wouldn't particularly mind if they killed Michael. But I don't think they killed Henry. I think Michael shot himself so that he can let Henry go but claim that he was shot trying to prevent Henry's escape are Henry killed Ana and Libby. (And if Libby survives even long enough to tell anyone, Michael is up shit creek with no paddle).

Ooh, I like that theory, and, yeah, I didn't miss Michael and haven't missed Walt so if they get rid of Michael, that'll be okay with me too.

Massive disbelief.

Though I still think they should eat Hurley.

Total BS. Didn't Lindelof intimate that except for a very general outline as to where the series is ultimately going, they're basically writing it by the seats of their pants?

On the other hand, one of my friends has been scouting locations in Oahu for his indie film and he got to know a few of the Lost production people, and they say each episode costs upwards of $2M to make (Hawaii's film production community is totally union and there are no other options). I can see why paring the actor/character roster is probably cost effective at this point, and I'm sure Rodriguez didn't come cheap. I'll venture to say that if this twist was indeed in the original plan, the original plan also called for the death[s] of original characters, something they won't do now that the audience is heavily invested in them. I wouldn't have minded if they offed Kate or Claire, but I bet other viewers might've balked at that (God knows why). So who better to kill off than a bunch of interlopers extraneous characters?

Some level of disbelief and I find it kind of intriguing to think that they lost the job because of their off-screen behavior. So many Hollywood folk do questionable stuff in their personal lives and don't suffer professionally. I remember my anger when Sharon Stone defended Kate Moss and said she shouldn't have lost modeling contracts because of the cocaine thing. I guess it's nice not to live in the real world where your behavior has consequences, even professional ones. I'd actually be oddly proud of the show if that's why they're gone. I did like Ana Lucia though. I thought she had potential as a character. Kind of edgy and rough.

I don't know that he ever admitted that they didn't loosely plan out the season just that the there is no huge masterplan for how all the seasons will develop so... basically the BtVS mode of planning.

Apparently they all got on the same page though because Michelle Rodriguez has been on the morning shows saying the same thing so it's a coordinated story between all of them at the least.

That said, I have heavy, heavy suspicions that part of why she was killed was that a large portion of the audience disliked her and she was no doubt expensive.

Even weirder was reading the report that if she's found guilty of parole violation (which really, DUH! DUI while on parole for DUI? Yeah, parole violation... except of course when you have a really expensive lawyer) she should end up with an 18 month jail sentence in California. What do you think the odds are of that going through?

Yeah, I didn' think so either.

Spin. Total spin. Though I will say it made for a heck of a show.

I like Mr. Eko a lot, and I was starting to get interested in Libby, too, so I'll be sad if Libby's dead and Eko bites it. Bernard and Ana-Lucia I don't care about.

They really didn't go out of their way to make AL *likable*. There's a certain bitch factor that some people can get into because it's fun. But they never gave her much in the way of warmth the audience would natually connect to. She just didn't have a high Hurley factor.
