shipperx: (FNL - Tim - broken thoughts)

Damn, I love this show! Is it me, or does it just get better and better? A list of greatness (in no particular order) for tonight's ep "It's Different for Girls":

* Jeez, they almost made me cry for Buddy Garity tonight. BUDDY GARITY! That's some damn good writing since just a few episodes I was wishing for him to be run out of town on a rail. And it isn't that they've reversed any of the things that made him intolerable, they've simply expanded the character. Sure, he's an obnoxious booster, but -- damn -- he loves his little girl and it turns out that he's a darn good Daddy. When that guy came in to apologize to Buddy for how his daughter had made a "Lyla is a whore" website, you could just see Buddy's heart breaking for his daughter, and when he came quietly to her bedroom, you knew that he just wanted to help her, he wanted to say the right thing. Sure, he has a lot of flaws, many of which are unlikeable, but they've also shown him to be steadfastly loving and supportive of his daughter so he can't be all bad.

* In fact, how rare is it to see a show showcasing so many truly loving parents? It seemed that tonight was the night to show loving parents. Buddy was supportive of Lyla. Lyla's mom -- while a tad screwy, was also steadfast in her support of her daughter. I absolutely love Smash's no-nonsense mom. And the Taylor family is portrayed to perfection, from Coach Taylor wanting to safeguard Julie, to Julie deliberately challenging her father, to Tami being the Mom who sees both sides and is somewhat amused by her hubby's territorial attitude.

* And Julie and Matt were totally adorable tonight. Poor Matt, the kid walking on egg shells around his girlfriend's father. The entire storyline was totally hilarious without being the least bit jokey, and that's not easy to pull off. It just played on the awkwardness of teen dating and the awkwardness of father/daughter relationships. Coach Taylor doesn't want any boy messing with his little girl... and all his efforts to throw a wrench in Julie's plans to date Matt went hilariously awry, because Julie is a strong willed girl who has her father's number. Again, the Taylors are just a lovely family who is perfectly cast because Tami Taylor rocks as a smart, insightful, funny, and compassionate Mom. I'm glad that they came up with the job of School Counselor for Tami. She was excellent as she picked up on the hell that Lyla was going through, and did her job quite well in seeking Lyla out and listening through Lyla's problems.

* And TIM!!! Oh yeah, he's totally hitting on my TV Boyfriend kinks with the unrequited love bit. First his silently chasing off the guys harrassing Lyla, without saying a single word, just by standing there (that was hot). Then his going to Jason to beg Jason to please give Lyla another chance. Damn, Tim really IS in love with Lyla, because that really had to hurt, his standing there saying that what he and Lyla had was nothing and that she always had and always would love Jason. Followed by Jason telling Tim to take care of it... and then Tim showing up on Lyla's doorstep! Aw. That was just... aw. His encouraging her to face down everyone and go and cheer in the competition (and damn, I remember being in those competitions cheering competitions in high school. They're tough (and I don't really buy that the squad would be the least bit sanguine with Lyla dropping out at the last minute because it would screw with their routines.) For dramatic purposes it was lovely as it was Tim urging Lyla to do this for herself, that she deserved it, and that he knew that she loved it. Aw. TIM! You're such a man (and how lovely did that fit in with part of the theme of the whole episode beginning with the -- utterly hilarious -- Taylor family conversation at the beginning of the episode where Coach Taylor was talking about how they had to support the girls because the girls supported them. Yeah, he was saying it all for his own purposes -- to keep Matt from Julie -- but supporting the girls was totally the point of the entire episode from Buddy's love and support of Lyla, to Lyla's mom and Tami supporting Lyla, to Coach Taylor's territorial protection of his daughter, to Matt telling Smash not to talk smack about Julie (hilarious scene), to Smash meeting a girl who refuses to take Smash's polygamous ways, to the utterly lovely (and kind of heart breaking) ending where Lyla does go to the competition at the end and Tim's there to cheer her on, and thinks she's smiling at him, only for him to notice that Jason showed up. He too is there to support Lyla. Ouch... and aw. And isn't it lovely? Jason, the good man, does the right thing and forgives the girl. And Tim, damn, he loves the girl. Wow, they've staged the triangle for some delicious angst. I love them all, and damnit, Tim's love for Lyla has the potential for a hell of a lot of unrequited angst. I love it.

* Oh, and dude, how could I forget, the boys in drag! Tim in ponytails! *dies*

Also, I really have to hand it to NBC. I appreciate that the network now posts all of their episodes online for free! Way to go, NBC.

All of Heroes Episodes

And because I'm all a-squee about tonight's episode and feeling all aglow and shippy, I hit YouTube and found a Tim and Lyla Vid (Heh, my shipping kinks are so damn predictable.)

I'm 100% in agreement. FNL has got it all, the characters you love to hate, the characters you love to love, and some of the best writing on TV right now.

I'm all for the Tim/Lyla/Jason triangle. I adore both Tim and Jason so it just breaks my heart to see either one of them all angsty. Tim's pep talk to Lyla was just guh!, her giving him the hug (squee!), and the Jason/Lyla angst fest... it's just pure TV gold. Heck, I feel guilty right now that I'm rooting for Tim because I like Jason so much!

Also, Matt and Julie are the cutest thing ever... Coach Taylor really has his work cut out for him. LOL

I honestly never thought I would get into another show set in high school after attempting Veronica Mars (which failed miserably at holding my attention), but I went and fell in love with FNL. I hope it stays on the air for a long, long time.

I love this show. It's Just. So. Damn. Good. I like ALL the main characters -- even Buddy Garrity now! :hugs show close and pets it:

Aw, man, Tim -- he really stepped up tonight, going to see Jason on Lyla's behalf, then encouraging Lyla to go back to cheerleading. I loved Lyla's "Yep, the whore with the Web site" comment.

Speaking of that, I thought that was a fabulous scene when the father of the girl who started it came to tell Buddy about it and apologize. It was a small scene between a secondary character and a character we'd never seen before, but it was very powerful and nicely done. Most shows wouldn't have a scene like that. What a standup guy the father was -- and how did he end up with such a bitchy daughter??

Really nice scene between Jason and the neighbor kid. I especially liked his "Don't play in the street, OK? This was a one-time thing."

I like Jason. I like Tim. This might be the first triangle where I'm not on a definite "side." Angst-o-rama.

I hope Coach figured out that Smash is taking steroids. He seemed to have a knowing look there in the bathroom.

"They had a blanket!!" "You're an idiot." LOL.

And, of course, Matt, Smash and Tim (pigtails!!) in drag!! BWAH!
