Hit the plant store before it became too hot to plant anything (even though it's already in the mid-80s around here).  I like to use annuals in the pots and beds in the front yard (the back yard is exclusively perennials and evergreens... and those are the ones who have proven themselves immune to neglect.  I have  a Darwinian approach to gardening -- only the strong survive.  This probably explains why my back yard is dominated by antique roses, daylilies, and irises, though I did plant new azaleas last month).   In front, however, I go with annuals which can survive the extreme heat of summer and I tend to stick with tried and true.

Anyway, I picked up:

Mexican Heather -  (in front bed w/ the Crepe Myrtle)

Angelonia -  (that's the purple, not the yellow)

Purslane -  (infilling the pot with the Oleander)

Sweet Potato Vine -  (dropping this into the same pot with my existing Oleander)

And old-fashioned Snapdragons -  (dropping this into the pot with my tiny Italian Cypress)

I'm a big fan of snapdragons. In fact, I have some cut ones currently in my kitchen window.

Ohh! I almost picked up some Sweet Potato vine because it's supposed to be super hardy. Heheee, only the strong survive, indeed. Espically under my care.
I'm all about ground cover this year. I'm determined to pretty up they yuck of the back yard.

If you have any shade in your backyard, may I suggest hostas as a plant that does without care very well. There are some very pretty ones.

I like them too. I have some salmon pink ones that are going on their third year. Pretty good for an annual!

I've had the acid green one before, they do grow a great deal (and must be tasty because there are bugs who love it). This time I have the really dark purple. The acid green didn't look good against the light green of the other plants. It is really nice against dark foliage or in an area that only gets partial sun.

I have a couple of hostas, but they've never done well for me. My back yard faces due south and so is almost entirely full sun. And, though my front yard faces north, in the summer the sun is so high that it still gets more than 6 hours of sun each day. The hostas sort of bake in the summer. Though I do love them and might try them in the small area of my yard with the October Glory Maples which have finally grown large enough to provide some shade.
