Based on some discussions in various fandoms, as well as some ruminations I've had about some old fandoms, I thought I'd poll and ask what others thought. Now, yes, I realize that all of these elements are important for entertainment. I used radio buttons because I'm curious about what is most important to a lot of people.

I can't answer this! It's different for each show. I'm not a shipper for Heroes. I love the message, of people finding something extraordinary in themselves. For VM, it was the character relationships. With Buffy it was the metaphor.

I actually am all about good characters. Not necessarily their relationships with each other; I just need one character I can care about and be interested in. That's the person that keeps me watching, even when the rest of these areas may waver.

You should do a "least important aspect" as well.

I was just coming in to say that.

I checked "relationships" but really "characterization" is more what I look for. I need to understand the characters. I need their decisions to make sense. And I need to feel an emotional attachment to them. I can like a show if I don't have that, but I'll never love it.

I picked metaphor but I'm another one that needs that one compelling character to keep me faithful.

Luke Skywalker has kept me hooked on Star Wars for decades!

I went with sense making plot, but nearly went with great actor.
When shows (X-Files, Twin Peaks, etc) lose the plot, usually I'm out, even though I love the actors and the characters.
I'm sticking with House based solely on Hugh Laurie. I just can't stop watching him do his thing. And the plot this year...plot? Uhh, I think I'll have to wank one up in retrospect, because I don't know where the hell they're going this year.

I definitely was torn, but I will leave a show I've previously loved if it starts feeling like the eppys are just being tossed out to keep the show on the air.

Yes, this is it for me, as well--at least one character that I care about in some way. The rest matter to me (well, not plot, really), but a good character, more than relationships, is what makes me come back.

I guess it does depend on the show. I finally settled on "bring the funny" because MOST of my favorite shows have a sense of humor... but there are a few I watch now that are pretty darned grim, so obviously there's more.
