shipperx: (Alabama _ Big Al)

Football season has come around again and, as usual, it pretty much consumed my weekend.

Opening game of the year and UofA has completely messed up the parking situation. Apparently the university doesn't make enough money selling in excess of 92,000 tickets to the game. They now insist on charging for parking and reserving entire parking lots for Ivory Club members. This kinda sucks. Also, the tailgating situation has reached a slightly surreal level of absurdity with people setting up tents on the Quad the night before the game and people now setting up big screen TVs and satellite dishes with generators up on the Quad. Gone are the days when tailgating remotely resembled having a picnic.

We sort of laugh and say that clearly we don't have the stamina or determination to tailgate that spectacularly. However, due to the parking situation we did leave home at 8:30 am for a 6pm game. We ended up spending most of the morning in my nephew's dorm room... said nephew must have spent every dime he made working this summer on the 52" plasma screen (complete with integral DVR) that he has in his dorm room... beats to hell the miniscule B&W I had in my dorm room back in the dark ages. We then spent the afternoon at a party (thankfully air conditioned!) at an business partner of my B.I.L.'s whose daughter goes to the university and whose apartment was a couple of blocks from the stadium, making the party an odd mix of adults and college students.

... And when did college girls decide that baby doll dresses are for running around just shy of being naked? They could cut to the chase and just go to the game in bikinis... that might cover more.

I swear to god there were two college girls at the party where there was nothing at all left to the imagination as their low-cut (and visibly braless) babydoll dresses exposed close to everything (and by visibly braless I don't mean oh, it's filmy and you can see that there's probably no bra. I mean that such significant amount of boobage bared in display that there's no conceivable way that a bra could be worn). My newphew's girlfriend looked practically Amish in comparison being (appropriately) attired in a t-shirt, jeans, and sandals (as opposed to filmy baby doll dress that's up to there and down to THERE coupled with 6" heels (how the hell do they stand in the bleachers for 3+ hours while wearing 6" heels? The mind boggles).

As to the game, thank GOD the heat has broken from the 105's. With the game in the evening, it was only 90 or so at the start of the game and was comfortably in the 80s/70s by the end.

We dominated the game, as we should have. We're a 2A school playing a 1A school so we should dominate. It's just that under our last coach we were uncomfortably close to losing such games (and then we did lose such a game), so returning to soundly beating people we should soundly beat was a good thing. QB had some over throws. The kicker is STILL suffering from the Arkansas debacle last year. I hope he gets his head on straight soon or we'll really need another kicker. The running backs, however, were impressive. Defense needs work (But then having lost so many seniors last year we knew that it would.) We can't expect a program to turn around on a dime, and we will have losses this year, but damn it was clear that we had a coaching staff that was in charge, that had a plan, and that was actually involved in teaching the kids and improving the team. We also had enough plays that my 12 year old neice couldn't call what the offense would do next. So, coaching-wise, it's night and day. And for all the copious whining of ESPN and naysayers, I think the Bama Nation is happy. (ESPN still likes to pretend that we were nuts to get rid of Shula, but, dudes, it was painfully clear that Shula simply was not a good coach and that UofA wasn't nuts to determine that he was never going to grow into the coach we need. It was the right move to change coaches. Of that I have little doubt, even if we have a losing season.)

Speaking of coaches in a hot seat . . .

Jeebus. Poor Michigan. That's one great big ouch! That was just... ouch. They had their 5th ranked heads handed to them by a 1A school. That coach has a lot of really tough questions to answer. On the other hand, I'm not going to pretend to pity Notre Dame. I was rooting for Georgia Tech all the way and was damned happy that GT gave ND a spanking.

After returning from the game, I've pretty much been laziness personified and haven't done nearly as much writing on my Seasonal Spuffy story as I had intended. (Originally I had scheduled to be finished with the first draft by now. Unfortunately... nope. I did sorta/kinda decide how I'm going to handle the ending of the story so I have hopes of completing it soon).

Hope everyone had a nice Labor Day weekend and hope that everyone who went to Dragon Con has had a great time.

Roll Tide.
