From TVGuide.com:

Meet the new Jeremy Piven. Bobby Cannavale, an Emmy winner during his run on Will & Grace and an upcoming guest star on Cold Case, will play the epitome of a "wing man" as the star of ABC's Cupid pilot.

In Rob Thomas' update of his 1990s series of the same name, Cannavale is Trevor Hale, a guy who believes he is the Roman god of love and has been banished to Earth until he can secure ABC Studios a syndication deal match up 100 couples. — MWM

But, I'm sorry.  This is a tough sell.  First, I didn't know who Rob Thomas was the first "Cupid" and, though I was never a Veronica Mars fan and thus not an embittered one, I don't know that I want to deal with the RT fangirls.  Plus, no Piven.  Piven was wonderful in the role (even if he is rumored to be an ass in real life) and I don't know that I want him replaced by a pretty-boy without as much personality.  Is it wrong of me that I look at the pic of the new Cupid and think "pretty boy"?

In order for the remake of "Cupid" to succeed, it will have to appeal primarily to people who never saw the first series. So I'm not sure the "not Piven" factor is such a huge deal, even though it's hard for me to picture anyone else in the role.

OMG, I know exactly how Cannavale is going to play this, too: like his character in The Station Agent, which is to say, manic, clueless, horny, and nuts. Which was fine for the SA character, but will be beyond annoying in this show.

Rob Thomas is a moron. He just doesn't know when to quit with his two ideas. I'll bet he'll actually re-hire showkiller Paula Marshall to play the psychologist (or if not, someone equally bad). I'll also predict right now that in five years he'll try to revive Veronica Mars. As I said, moron. And television suits are stupid enough to keep throwing money at him, hoping something will stick. Feh.

Okay, wait a minute, I have to retract some of that -- I forgot that Cannavale is a Latino actor (even though his last name is Italian) and there are so few of them in any roles on TV that I cant in good conscience begrudge him this one. So, you go, chico.

Also, Cannavale is like 6'4" and is about as much like Piven as I am. ;)

While I was a Veronica Mars fan, I don't necessarily consider myself embittered.

Honestly, I don't see this working. I watched ALL of the original Cupid and it wasn't all that great. I watched primarily for Piven.

'nuff said.

I doubt that there are a lot of people beyond tv fandoms who remember much about the original. Still, I have my doubts that a pretty boy as Cupid could make the series better for me (I don't say 'successful' because goodness knows there are a ton of 'successful' shows on TV which don't appeal to me in the least -- "Grey's Anatomy," "Desperate Housewives," "The Bachelor", etc. So it may be a smash hit this time around, but I don't know that I anticipate it to be better than the original.

I truly liked Cupid, but...

You had to truly believe that Piven's character believed he was Cupid (and you had to at least wonder if it was true) for the series to work.

What little I've seen of this guy, I have to wonder if he can do sincere and charming but strange.

I just find it hilarious that RT's projects on deck are a remake of Cupid, a remake of 90210, and a remake of Outrageous Fortune. I second the opinion that VM will get an attempted relaunch in 5 years.

Wow. Cannavale was pretty good in The Station Agent and Third Watch. Hell, he even elevated Will and Grace and that was one tall order. So I don't dismiss him out of hand as a pretty boy. I'd at least give him a shot at the role.

I think the show will sink on its own merits because RT is a Whedonesque egomaniacal control freakazoid.

The entire concept is a tough sell for anyone who watched the original. However, there were so few of us, it might not matter if they can get new eyeballs. But I doubt it. There's not going to be any way I'll be able to watch it and not compare it to the original -- to its detriment, of course.

Piven WAS Trevor, and Trevor IS Piven to me, so I simply cannot imagine anyone else in the role.

Hee! Well, at least it seems to be a radical restaging. Maybe it will work (still seems strange to me to try the series again).

Oh, I liked the original Cupid, but iut was all about Piven riffing. I don't know that it could really stand up all on script alone.

I have to admit that I rather liked the way that Piven looked like anything except a Greek God. That was part of the charm. I don't know that the same irony would hold if the guy actually looks the part in any way.

It is very strange to do this sort of string of remakes all in a row. I wouldn't put a VM remake past him.

It's good to know he can act. I have never seen the guy before. But, yeah, like with Whedon, the RT's rep is enough to make me wary before the show even airs.

Yeah, it might possibly be successful. But I think Piven will always be Trevor to me too.

Don't get me wrong, I *liked* Cupid, but it was no Buffy or BSG or even VM. As you said, it was a cute, unassuming Piven vehicle.

I don't even remember who the actress was who played his love interest.

Unless this new guy, who I may have seen but am unfamiliar with, has as much raw personality as Piven - or unless RT has greatly reimagined the theme of the show - it doesn't stand a chance......is my opinion.
