From TVGuide.com:

With Sex and the City nearing its release day, rumors have been flying about whether there will be a death in the city — and in particular, the death of Mr. Big.

Director Michael Patrick King, however, laid that buzz to rest, more or less. "Kill Mr. Big? I would have been chased around the planet by women with torches," he joked to the AP. Yet, King did confide that he was looking to infuse some layers of melodrama into this film adaptation of the show — but perhaps not as much as a darker drama would call for.

"My ultimate target," King said, "was to make our 'girlfriends' — in other words, our audience — happy. And I don't think Mr. Big dying would make them happy."

When pressed on the possibility of potential other deaths (Carrie gets hit by a cab after tripping in her Chloe gladiators? Charlotte suffocates in the steam room?), however, King denied the possibility. "It's a summer movie," he said. "Why would I want to kill anyone?" Do you buy King's denials?

Little does he know that the denied spumor would have made me quite happy.

Me too. I hated Big so, so much. And I like Chris Noth! But ugh, that character was awful and brought out all of Carrie's worst traits. I was so disappointed with the finale that I'm refusing to see the movie unless I'm spoiled for a Big/Carrie breakup or something.

Well, the trailer makes clear that he dumps her at the altar (which spurred the death rumors, that I was really hoping were (are?) true.)

I don't care about S&TC, so the proposed spoiler doesn't matter to me at all. But it's kind of refreshing to hear a producer say his goal is to make the audience happy.

And I believe him. The biggest problem with the SATC movie is that they gave the characters happy endings in the series. Uptight, workaholic Miranda married a guy easy-going enough to live with her. Samantha survived breast cancer and her boy toy du jour turned out to have substance enough to stand by her through the ordeal. Charlotte gave up the idea of Prince Charming when her "perfect" marriage fell apart and she found real happiness with short, bald divorce attorney who loved her. Together they adopted a child after Charlotte's years of infertility. And, even if I personally didn't think much of Big (I thought he was a big Douche) the character of Carrie was happy that she'd finally caught her elusive "One."

They didn't leave many threads to pick up again for a movie. Killing Big would have introduced some instability that would provide drama. Though, I know that it would be incredibly upsetting for fans who bought into the Big/Carrie Twu wuv bit (personally, I always preferred Aidan to Big. But that ship sailed.)

Anyway, I do think the producer is genuine about wanting to give out happy endings. SATC was a comedy not a melodrama. But they have to have something to shake all the women out of their 'happy endings' (Though I was quite happy to see from trailers that Charlotte got her miracle and is pregnant).

I agree with Sarah. Love Chris Noth. Dislike Mr. Big. I wouldn't cry into my cornflakes if he doesn't live. I can't see them killing him off because lots of fans love Big and Carrie.

I predict that if there's a death it will be a minor character but a fan favorite to shock the girls all back to the "true meaning of life."

Oh, I love CHris. And I was reconciled to the Big/Carrie thing. It's just when all was said and done, I never bought that Big would change and he had been such a douche to Carrie so many times.

And if it can't be Big who dies, I don't want anyone to die. :)

Hee! But Joss believes that you give the audience what they need.
