Fringe

So, okay, this one is pretty simple. Fringe = X-Files ... except the female lead is no Scully. Or, rather, she's no Gillian Anderson. I really would have liked to feel her angst over Jack Deveraux IV...er... I mean, Mark Valley's character. But she's just not Gillian. On the other hand Pacey is Pacey. And, actually, I don't have a problem with that. Production values were fairly good but, like True Blood, I'm underwhelmed but willing to give the show a chance to develop.

ETA: Okay, the twist has me hearing a jaws theme and looking wildly for Fonzie. Are we supposed to have followed that? More to the point, were we supposed to care?

Things were as clear as mud there but I was entertained so I'll give it another shot. I'm really trying not to compare the lead to Scully. However, even without setting the bar within Scully range - the lead fell a bit short. Hopefully she improves because she could be my biggest obstacle.

I also found the lead actress pretty dull, which surprised me - Abrams previous casting choices, like Keri Russell and Jennifer Garner, have been pretty good. The rest of the cast is solid, and obviously the X-Files proved that the concept can work. I'll give it some time.

I think she was supposed to be Mulder but there wasn't enough time for the obsession to develop. I didn't believe in the intelligence or motive of the lead. So it was all just gimmick.

Me too. The lead is a strange combo of Renee Zellweger and Cate Blanchett (I suppose because she's Australian) with the Zellweger predominating unfortunately, so I totally agree with you about her being no Scully. Her character will make or break this show for me - if she gets more annoying, I'll stop watching altogether.

I liked Pacey, actually - he's a genuine grownup now, even though he still looks a bit like a hobbit. I really like Lance Riddick (scary), John Wood (who I totally didn't recognize as Theoden until they uncovered his massively wavy hair) and Kirk Acevedo (playing a good guy for once, although I'll bet he'll turn soon - this is an Abrams show after all). Nice to see Mark Valley playing a (reanimated, heh) villain, too.

The Hanso-like stuff is a little irritating (get a new idea, JJ), and it saddened me to see that Molly Dodd is playing the Cigarette-Smoking Man in this thing, but I'll reserve judgment until one or two more episodes go by.

That sounds like vintage J.J. Abrams WTF-ery!

She reminds me strongly of "Without a Trace"'s Poppy Montgomery.

But, actually, my main gripe with her is that I never felt anything in what should have been an angsty situation. We'll see whether it's really primarily the actress or whether I'm simply slow to warm to a character. Either is possible.

I found it something of an unlikely stretch that she could remember several days later a tiny bit of a conversation heard in passing that just happened to be the vital clue that revealed everything.
