Just saw this on the EW site.  I have to say, that's what I had thought all along.  I was surprised when I got online and saw people claiming it was some new, final 'twist.'

My thought was what a nice little hommage to where it started.

But there were people on TWOP wigging out that this was some extra final twisty coda.

Anyway, it's official.  It had nothing to do with the plot.

From EW:

...ABC just threw those final images in there, and it didn’t actually have anything to do with the show’s plot.  ABC  told the LA Times that the network – not executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuseadded the shots of the beach simply to soften the transition from the emotional ending of the series finale to the 11 p.m. news and didn’t realize that viewers who had been obsessing over every detail of every scene of every episode might have considered the series’ final images as having some hidden meaning.

“”The images shown during the end credits of the Lost finale, which included shots of Oceanic 815 on a deserted beach, were not part of the final story but were a visual aid to allow the viewer to decompress before heading into the news,” an ABC spokesperson told the Times.

Mystery solved.

I saw that. I can't believe people actually thought it meant something! I was surprised too when I came online and saw people were speculating about it.

When I read that yesterday, my first thought was that this once again just shows how out of touch network executives are with the fans of their shows. They should have known that doing that was going to set people off in all kinds of crazy directions of speculation about what it meant. Nitwits.

I'm not surprised at all. Obsessive people obsess. LOL

I did see that cropping up in the commentaries, but I never saw it that way myself.

Helpful network execs are not helpful!

I would be a little miffed if I were the producers, but at least they sent out a correction.

I saw this story.

The images gave me a few moments of "Did they all die then?" but then as I decompressed myself, I realized more and more what Christian's words to Jack meant, and what the Sideways 'verse was. Then I figured the closing montage was just that -- a montage.

Next thing you know, someone will claim that the number shirts on BtVS were just a random choice of the costume department!

LOL! I remember people cooking up elaborate theories about that. People who weren't even WilliamThePoet (who could concoct elaborate theories about anything!)

If networks just had a better understanding about how fanwankily obsessive fans actually are! :)

I was really surprised by all the theories about it online. I thought it was pretty obvious what it was.

Although it's funny because WtP used to obsess about WOO and that might actually be applicable to Lost since it was influential on Darlton.

I know. It had never crossed my mind that it wasn't just a few shots added to the credits as some sort of little hommage.
