shipperx: (Dr Who - 11 Surprised)

Popped over to TWOP and read the Dr. Who Season Finale thread and -- boy, those people are tough!  Seriously, is having a 'happy ending' such a horrific chore? OMG not enough people died.  Whatever.  It's okay for everything not to end in navel gazing loneliness, people!  It's okay to shake things up every now and again with dancing.  No, a steady diet of happy endings isn't 100% satisfying, neither is the ever repetitive 'it must end in tears' ones.  It's okay to mix it up a little.

When did happy endings become inherently bad?

I'm glad it got a happy ending. And I'm glad that the season ended with the Doctor still having the companion he started out with.

Not that I read the thread, but I'm in total agreement with you. I found it extremely refreshing that this time they did not force it towards a lonely Doctor hovering away.

Watched it with three friends and we all loved Amy's Goodbye. Angst for angst's sake is no good, when it fits a character (and it does fit Amy) then the adventure has to go on.

This is the first time in New Who that we've had continuity in both Doctor and companion going forward into the next series, so the ending was bound to be happier just based on the storytelling logistics. But I agree, as much as I perversely enjoy being punched in the gut by sad endings, it was refreshing not to be for once. The Doctor really needed some happiness, and I was thrilled to see that he got some.

I thought it was pretty clear that it was a happy ending for now, with foreboding of trouble to come, which isn't really the same as a Happily Ever After.

Exactly!

I suppose the reason I'm shocked is because after the last several Ten Dr. Who Specials which largely dwelled upon his having to be alone etc, I found this one to be a change because they had hit the 'alone' button so much in the last several endings. I'm sure angsty separations and deaths are sure to come. I just don't think that every season needs to end on relatively the same note.

Really? I haven't been there lately, but they are really upset that we have a happy ending for the first time in years? I mean, I liked all the angst but it was time for a change (and actually Journey's End should have been happy but RTD is incapable of happy endings) so Moffat did nicely to give us something new.

I liked it. I thought the season as a whole was uneven and slow to get off the ground, but it really improved in the last few episodes, and I felt that Matt Smith really settled into the character at last. And while there were some WTF? moments in the finale (if the Doctor was erased from time, why did River remember to drop the book at Amy's wedding?) but overall I thought it went off very well.

And I love, leve, love that Amy and Rory got married and then went adventuring. I've wanted multiple not-crushing-on-the-Doctor companions for four years now!

(Now, if only we can pick up someone not from Earth occasionally...)

It's TWOP. They just suck more every day.

And if Moffat had brought the angst, you now they would have been raking him over the coals for being too much like RTD. Seriously, there are places where the show can't win no matter what they do.

Heh, I am one of the hardest people to please when it comes to happy endings, so if I liked it, it must have been good. :)

No, a steady diet of happy endings isn't 100% satisfying, neither is the ever repetitive 'it must end in tears' ones.

Yeah, I think that's the key. If every season ended this way, it would be monumentally boring, not least of which because we'd know that there was no real danger. As it is, we pretty much always know that the Doctor will save the day, so the only angst to be had is over what the sacrifices will be. And it's okay, once in a while, to surprise us and have everything turn out great without having to sacrifice anything. I wouldn't recommend it all the time, but I think the Doctor and his companions have suffered enough that they earned this one.

I don't care what anyone says, I was 100% satisfied with it! :-) It's about time we had the Doctor traveling with TWO regular companions (and a married couple, at that!), and a Doctor who isn't completely Emo-for-the-sake-of-EMO, too. We shed a few tears, then everything worked out. On with the next adventure!
