shipperx: (Don't Shoot We're Pathetic)
[personal profile] shipperx
I was going to post some stuff regarding metaphor and Spuffy, etc. But, honestly, emotions in fandom seem to be running really high right now so I don't think a post would help. (And it wasn't important anyway. So no big deal and no big loss.)

All I can say is that, please, everyone cut everyone some slack, okay? A little generosity in fandom could go a long way. People think and feel different things. People don't agree. That's okay!

Okay?

And if people disagree about a character or a plot twist or a ship, don't take that as personal criticism. The character, the plot twist, the ship, the show or the comic are not you. And if someone sees it differently than you do, it's OKAY. It's just a plot, a character, a ship, a comic, a plot twist. It's not you... even if sometimes we identify so closely with our various obsessions that it feels like it. Such is the crazy of fandom. Embrace it. We've all been there. It's just that sometimes that identification with the character, the ship, the plot twist, the meta, the show, the comic causes blurred lines where things feel personal when they aren't and things become personal when they shouldn't be.

It's just fandom! Go take a gander at fandom_wank. All corners of it are full of kerfuffles, feuds, hard feelings. So, you know what? Everyone deserves some slack. We're all a bit looney here. :)

Take a deep breath, try to be kind, and remember -- it's only a show, a story, a character, a ship, a comic, or a plot twist.

Heh! I remember that.

That was when Project Runway was still interesting!

Yes, indeedy! I miss that Project Runway. It was my Sophomore year in college, and my friend Lauren and I would go into the dorm common room and watch it on this ENORMOUS big screen TV. It was magical.

I think that Andre's massive meltdown could explain how I feel about fandom sometimes. "And I was standing... in the middle of Chinatown... screaming at the top of my lungs.... NOOOOOOOOOO!!!" LOL. :D

I go back and forth between thinking the DH marketing people are morons and/or geniuses. I get the impression they're deliberately poking ships to get buzz. Kinda sad, but right up their (and Joss's) alley. Unfortunately for them, any buzz is good buzz doesn't really work as well in the internet age.

Fan is short for fanatic. We all need to remember that. ;-)

Well, I think I've settled on even if DH thinks they're evil geniuses... they're still behaving like morons.

Heh. True. It's sort of difficult to keep perspective when the entire activity is based on already having lost perspective!

Andre! I loved Andre. And Austin (Austin doesn't seem anywhere near as adorable any more)

These are the days I look to the_royal_anna's post on "cleaning up inside other people's heads" and find it particularly meaningful. I kind of regard splits in fandom the same way I do politics. There are a lot of people on my flist with politics that I'm not necessarily going to agree with. But I don't regard their posted opinions as a comment on myself - it's just their opinion. Likewise, if I post on my politics, it's not a statement on members of my flist. Just an expression of opinion.

I suppose that we as nuts should stick together, in order to better form a smooth blend - because who likes crunchy peanut butter? (Unless by saying that, I've just pissed off the crunchy peanut butter contingent...)

and it scares the shit out of me because I haven't been there and some of my favorite fandom people are arguing and I don't know what to do to make them stop.

So true. :sigh: I still can't quite believe this. It's all so completely unnecessary.

This. I just don't understand how that even happened. A belief that there hasn't been a shippy Spuffy moment in any of the interaction so far between Spike and Buffy in the comics doesn't mean that those beliefs are a direct attack on someone clinging to any thread they can that there's still something to hope for. I didn't see anything either, but for me, it's merely a personal belief that Spuffy is dead, long live Independent Spike!

Yeah. Somewhere along the way the volume got cranked up to eleventy. Not sure how to turn it back down, but it's making it difficult to communicate and causing people to yell.

I couldn't agree more -- it is just fandom, and it is supposed to be fun!

I blame part of it on the nature of the interwebs in and of itself, and of online journals in particular. A private journal in a public space is a very odd hybrid that sometmes yeilds surprising results.

Thanks for this common-sense approach.
