What Does It Say About Hollywood?

Huh... wonder what it says about Hollywood that in the last day or so I've watched two anti-hero/hero movies. One in live-action and the other in animation... and the animation one is lightyears better. Better characters, more innovative, and funnier.

Currently watching The Green Hornet and honestly, it's clear why it did nothing at the box office. It isn't funny. It isn't fun. It's not even interesting. In fact, it's not far from being offensive.

On the other hand, last night I watched the animated Megamind, and it was actually funny and endearing.

What does it say that Hollywood's live action superheroes suck so much than the 'kiddie' animation ones?

(Frankly, I had a similar thought while watching the animated "Tangled" the other day. Swear to god, it was more entertaining that most of the rom coms these days.)

Sophie *loved* Megamind and kept trying to get me to watch it. I didn't because I was just too lazy, but hmmm.

I loved Tangled. Zach Levi did awesome voice work. I was really impressed.

We're actually watching Megamind at this moment. It's marvelous -- but based on the advertising, it held no appeal when it was in the theatres. (Wait a minute. "There is no Queen of England"?)

I think animation's given more time to grow and become good than the live action stuff.

It's actually pretty amusing. Part Superman-spoof and part "anti-hero redemption story". You'd probably enjoy it.

It's as if both Superman and Lex Luthor were launched to earth at the same time. Superman got adopted by super rich parents, everyone thought he was awesome, and he got everything. Lex...er... Megamind at some point during school decided "screw it! I'll just be evil" only when he finally bests Superman (something that even shocks him)... what does he do then?

It's part Superman-spoof part anti-hero becomes the hero story, so it was pretty cute Disney-style (though I think it was Dreamworks)

I just rented Tangled a couple weeks ago-- it was the only thing none of us had seen. We all loved it! I'll have to give Megamind a try based on that. I saw a preview that didn't make it sound all that exciting.

It's a fairly funny spoof where the bad guy is the good guy.

I haven't seen either of those action movies but I have seen Tangled and can 100 percent agree. I think the live action movies are often reusing old themes/tropes or going towards ones of fail, while the comedic ones stick to the basics of a good story but stay innovative. Brave, for example, is the thing I am most excited about right now :)

Well, The Green Hornet had the highly overrated, unfunny and unattractive Seth Rogen at its center, so of course it was bad. Why he keeps getting film roles is beyond me. He must be very well connected somehow, 'cause it sure ain't on his talent or looks.

I might watch Megamind now.

Definitely watch Megamind! I hadn't expected to like it, but they played it on the bus on our way out to Cape Canaveral for the launch of Endeavour and I got caught up in it very quickly. Apparently, I have an iron-clad kink for bad guys who are playing a role and are subconsciously in love with the person they keep menacing and rise to the occasion when real destructive evil comes along.

Seriously, this movie ended up hitting all sorts of buttons for me.

I loved Megamind but I will cop to really enjoying Green Hornet, though I like to call it by its real name, The Awesome Kato and That Pathetic Rich Guy Who Thought He Was in Charge.

Oh, so agree. Found Megamind charming and rather funny in places, while most of the superhero films have been rather unappealing.
Same with Tangled. Loved Tangled, found the latest Rom-Com I tried to watch, unwatchable.

It's almost as if the animators at Pixar and Dreamworks are having more fun?

Seth Rogen is the best bud of Judd Apatow who has clout up the kazoo.
Apatow states in the commentary to the film The TV Set - that his goal in life is to make Seth Rogan a leading man. That Seth is his alter-ego.

So..blame Judd Apatow (who did Freaks and Geeks, Knocked Up, and a whole slew of other films that I've avoided.)

Oh, I missed the first fifteen minutes of it. Really need to catch the first fifteen, missed that entire bit.

It has great dialogue. So did Tangled. I was utterly charmed and laughing my head off. I think I posted a bit of dialogue from Megamind on my lj recently.
Highly recommended.
