Date: 2012-06-04 02:47 pm (UTC)The show version was short and sweet and hit the major points - what was dear to Dany, what she wanted the most - family with Drogo and the Iron Throne, paled before things which were much much bigger - Winter and Dragons.
That's what her tale will be about, Ice and Fire, and the rest has to be given up...
That scene with Drogo and the baby was so powerful...
I finished Book 2 right after watching the finale, and I'm glad they muted what happened in Winterfell and the Bastard theme. The way the book ended was absolutely heartbreaking, still can't process it. :(
But the show ending was also wow. I thought it would end with Dany and dragons again, but it ended with Ice.

Date: 2012-06-04 05:15 pm (UTC)I think they did too... which is a shame, because I think the sacking of Winterfell could have been shown and it be more profound. It really broke my heart in the book when they burned the place.
And I don't buy the great love of Drogo, myself. That said, I think that Dany buys it so as a reflection of her views, I can accept it. She does think of him in that idealized "our love was so wonderful" way... but, then Dany has horrid taste in men.
And I agree that what they did was lovely... but I sill missed the dinner that foreshadows the R.W.

Date: 2012-06-04 05:18 pm (UTC)The neat part of it in the book was that it was like a freaky acid trip that made no sense whatsoever... until a book or two later. Then you go back and read it and go "Whoa! It was all in there!"
Then again, Martin loves foreshadow. On re-reading Big Walder and Little Walder at play was also foreshadowing stuff and I never caught THAT either.
The sacking of Winterfell was heartbreaking in the book. I wanted Theon SO VERY DEAD at the end of that book!
And the Dragons are so cute... they remind me of that adorable little compy in Jurassic Park... right before it melted Neuman's face! ;)

Date: 2012-06-05 01:51 pm (UTC)So if they did the same in the show it would be like Restless with Dawn and Loan Shark foreshadowing?
It doesn't always work in the show, especially if they won't get renewed.
If those Dany's visions are important for the latest seasons, they'll find a way for Dany to have them later.
But yeah, Houses of Undying in the book were pretty neat!
