Realization about Illyria
Apr. 15th, 2004 11:28 amI'm not going to disagree with anyone that the Wes/Frillyria thing draaaggggeeeddddddd last night. It was like Wes/Frillyria existed in an entirely different ep. Interesting in small bits, but it gets old fast. But in chat last night, it finally hit me why I still don't fall into the category of "not getting the Illyria point."
. . .I think it's because I don't expect there to BE any point to Frillyria. I don't expect it to be kicking off any story. I don't expect it to tie into Fred. I don't expect it to start or finish anything. It is what it is and nothing more, so because I don't expect more from it, I'm not particular bothered that nothing's coming from it.
And the reason I feel this way, I think is that I don't believe that Illyria is a story at all. Never was. Wasn't intended to be. She's a character. The point was that Fred died. The story was (past tense) that Fred died. The introduction of Illyria is no more of a big story kick off than the introduction of Gunn in Season 1 or Lorne in Season 2. That's not to say that there's no stand alones expanding her, it's just that the character isn't a portent for any plot. She is what and who she is. She's not a storyline. Now, why Joss did it? Probably typical shock value of killing Fred. And yeah, Frillyria is created from the pieces and parts of the season's theme (and as such she makes sense as a character but, other than for convenient exposition and belly button gazing, she isn't kicking off a storyline.
I can see where this is irritating to some people and I can't argue against that. But I think some of the frustration with the character is that they're expecting an Illyria story that would pull the season together... and I don't think she's ever going to do that. She's a character not a story (if that makes any sense).
However, the Illyria/Wes scenes last night DID drag and seem out of context. AA is doing good work though.
