Matt and Julie were so totally adorable early in the episode when she demanded that he say that she's the coolest girl around and when he accidentally called her his girlfriend. How totally adorable. Also adorable was when he was protesting about being kidnapped and Riggins asked "Just tell me straight up, are you whipped?" Hee! Yeah. He is. And then, of course, poor Julie. You just knew she wasn't going to take the calendar well. Poor thing holding back tears. Someone hug her. She got her heart broken. And Matt did the breaking, but it wasn't intended. He's just a young kid and.... boys do stupid things sometimes. Both of them need a hug.

Also in the totally awesome category was Smash's Mom telling Smash that it was her job to worry about him. And something else to "awwwwww" about was Smash and Coach Taylor playing football with the kiddies. That little boy saying to expect him in a few years was so cute.

I also loved Buddy Garrity totally cracking up at Coach Taylor's inepitude on the talk show. How very real. Also real were his protests to Coach Taylor about Lyla's and Jason's engagement. Freaking PITCH PERFECT! That's totally how damn near any parent would react. They're so young. When Coach Taylor told him "they're smart kids." Buddy said "I thought they were before this." (Of course, Lyla is trying to think ahead, so he should have confidence in his daughter. But, hell yeah, of course he's wigged out about his HIGH SCHOOL daughter talking about marriage.) Coach Taylor's advice to Buddy to not forbid it because it would only make them more determined. Good job on him counselling Jason to take some time.

Anyway, it hurt to watch Julie's heart break, but they nicely lightened it with Smash's joy at getting to play. Oh! And Tim Riggin's dad showed up for the game. Bless, Friday Night Lights, the antithesis of Joss Whedon-like parent issues. Even when parents are screwed up (as Tim's Dad clearly is) somewhere deep down they all love their kids. They may not be perfect parents. In fact Tim's and Tyra's parents may not even be particularly good parents, but the show makes efforts to show that there's love.
