Well, rewatching Chosen...

I don't know if it's just that my sentiments have been cemented since seeing it the first time or what, but if anything now I'm even more convinced that Buffy just said "I love you" because she thought Spike was about to die and that he'd want to hear it, and Spike saw through her. When he said "No you don't" she almost had a look of "you're right. You know me too well."

I end up thinking, no. She didn't love him. And, no, he didn't believe her... nor should he. She didn't love him. Cared some. Loved? She was trying to play out the scene and give him what she thought he needed to hear.

And the scoobs STILL SUCK! That final scene is still just plain galling. Hearing them joke about the goddamned MALL with Anya, Spike, and Amanda dead. It makes me really, really hate the scoobs.

...and this is why I haven't rewatched Chosen since May (nor am I going to, ever). It's nice to be free.

I always think of a dying dog getting patted on the head.

I still don't know if Buffy loved Spike. And frankly, I don't really care to know the answer, because even if she did, her love is a poor, sad thing. Sure, she believed in him. Sure, she stood up against her friends for him. Sure, she risked her life to save him multiple times. I give her credit for that.

But Buffy's always been good at the grand gesture, hasn't she? It's all those little moments that make up a life and a relationship (you know, the ones that actually define us as people) that Buffy can't manage.

ME finished the job S6 started; they ruined Buffy in S7. I can even pinpoint three specific things: forklatio, Angel-breath, and 'why does it have to mean anything?'. These scenes, instead of making her look like a 'girl who is just not ready' made her instead look like a using, manipulative bitca who sucks the life out of men and then tosses them aside when a shinier toy appears in her vision.

Joss must have been doing very heavy drugs when he wrote that episode, because it really is that bad. I just love his whole comment that he just had to handle the deaths with shorthand so that he could move on to the happy ending. Uh, no Joss. That won't work. You can't kill off beloved characters and then segue immediately into the hopeful, happy ending without letting some time pass internally. That's just guaranteed to make the survivors look like jerks. We do actually remember how they mourned Jenny, Joyce, and Cassie, for crying out loud. The audience doesn't have to excuse you just because you wanted to kill off the SOs to wring some tears out of the audience and support your growing up metaphor. It's not our fault you wasted episode after episode with meaningless crap and had to cram too much into the final hour. Maybe you should have cut the lame TTT rip-off. PJ is probably laughing all the way to the bank and the Oscars.
