Okay, have watched through Ep 7... Thoughts:

Trixie is slowly growing on me. She's self destructive as hell because she takes some damn dangerous chances, but she seems to have intelligence that she actively works against. And she seems to have a heart under it.

Joanie also seems interesting.

I also like Calamity Jane a great deal. The actress is very good and you feel for her.

Like Wild Bill's friend (don't know his name).

Like Al's bartender. And Al is heinous yet fascinating.

I really don't care for Alma at all. She seems very passive-aggressive, and there's something very cold there under it all.

(What does it say about me that I care more for the prostitutes than the "lady?")

And I know Bullock's the "hero" (as much as anyone is), but it isn't coming off as heroic so much as... I don't know. There's something uptight, controlled... something there is almost self-serving (honestly, he kind of reminds me of Buffy. Here, I am hero, and I know I'm the hero 'in the little movie in my head.' He does the right thing more often than not. And he isn't heartless. It just feels... somehow, it feels intellecutualized. I don't know that it's really coming from his gut. It's head oriented not heart oriented. In some way he, like Alma, seems cold and controlling.

Oh, and I like the Doctor as well. (Although, I realized that the preacher probably had a brain tumor before they diagnosed it on screen).

Heh. Excellent analysis all around. Al's bartender/strong-arm man is Dan; Wild Bill's friend is Charlie. Both are wonderful (and in Dan's case, scary), each in his own way. You're completely right about Trixie, Jane and Joanie -- all are fascinating and will only get more so as the show progresses. And while [livejournal.com profile] bluemoon14 undoubtedly will disagree, you're absolutely correct in your assessment of Alma as well.

You've totally sussed out Seth, too, something that I've come to realize in the second season. I never thought about it that way, but he is like Buffy (unyielding, self-righteous, "my way or the highway," etc.).

I can only add: just wait. The second season is shaping up to be even better, if that's possible. It's a great, great show.

I don't know because I haven't listened to commentaries and writer interviews, but I suspect this is going along with some of the same themes of "Butch and Sundance" in that I tend to think we're going to see the end of the "Wild" West. As "society" moves in the likes of Al, etc will be increasingly marginalized (unless they can take over). So I think that the Bullock's and the Alma's will "win" in the end. . .and I'm suspicious that we're being set up to think that civilization is no more civilized than the wildness was. As it becomes more "civilized" it the iron fists that triumph will be those that can hide it beneath velvet gloves.

There will eventually be classism, and I think that Bullock's eye is to be in a higher class.

It's all just suspicion based on bitty things so I don't know. I do know that I like Sol better than I like Bullock.

I'm interested to see if your opinions of Seth and Alma change after you've seen all twelve episodes.
