No, TVGuide, you're not alone.

I was somewhat amused by this exchange by TVGuide writers re: Book Vs. GOT Show

And now, to address the mammoth in the room:

Hanh: Going into Season 3 of Game of Thrones, the obvious event on every book fan's mind has to be ________. I'm so scared of spoiling anything that I don't want to spell [the abbreviation], but I assume everyone reading this chat knows what we're talking about.

Sadie: When I read the book, I couldn't look at it again for days after I read that scene {...} Does it make me a little horrible that I'm excited to see ______? I feel like a serial killer.

Hanh: Yes, you're horrible and so am I!

Heh. I suspect most book readers are the same sort of 'horrible'. >;)

Boy, LJ is slow and cranky for me just now!

Just wanted to say, I'm looking forward to it. A bit nervous too, though. I'm sure there are going to be some things I won't be able to watch at all.

I haven't read the books, so I have no idea what this Thing That's Coming is, only that it will be horrible, lol. I'm really wondering now, lol. Without being spoilery, is it the sort of thing that's probably going to happen at the very end of the season?

Given the episode titles (and what that leads me to guess), I'm thinking it'll be before the last episode.

There is another equally (nearly as equal?) significant moment approximately half-way through the book that there's no way to tell whether it's making it into season 3 or held for season 4. That moment may be the finale... or it could be held until next season. At the moment the second event is a complete unknown for all.

But the event in the ________ in the EW comment is definitely this season and takes place mid-way through the book so pretty much all book readers have guessed at least that turning point makes it into this season.

LJ has been cranky today.

And there are lots of things that happen in Book III, some will have to wait until Season 4 though. But the _______... If they can pull that off adequately, I'll be impressed.

I haven't read the books, and I'm relatively unspoiled, barring the knowledge of whether or not Jon Snow and Arya have survived so far in the source material. I told my husband halfway through season 1 that I just couldn't continue on without knowing, whatever his answer was going to be.

So I really have no idea what you are talking about.

But I have heard this phrase bandied about. It involves a color, and a life event and I'm *betting* you all are referring to that. Of course, I have *no* idea who is involved in the event, but I can guess. And I have no clue as to why that event has earned the descriptive color adjective, but I can guess. And I can't wait for season 3 to start to find out if I'm right.

We're all trying to figure out how they will do it and just how much they will show...because that scene is amongst the most violent and upsetting in the books (no, I have not gotten to what happens in Dance of Dragons yet.)

Also ...I'm admittedly sadistic - I want to see the tv fandom that has not read Storm of Swords...implode. Bwahhahh.

Personally that scene didn't bother me that much for various reasons, 1)fictional character deaths don't bug me - never have, and 2) I sort of figured it out ahead of time, so wasn't surprised by it. (note to self do not read the character chart at the back of the books until you finish reading the books - spoilers lie there.)

It's not even the physical violence of it (though the final image haunts me.) It's the EMOTIONAL violence. It holds two of the most emotionally devastating moments I can imagine. It's just so... merciless.

Makes sense. The ____ event is in the middle or first half, and the second event you are referring to is some time after the first event, and towards the end. Although there are two rather important events in between.

At any rate...tv viewers will most likely think after watching S3 - that fans of Storm of Swords are a sadistic lot. LOL!

Yeah, the first event really has to be in Season 3. It's that huge and is a major turning point for the novel.

The second event, though. I think it would make sense to stage the second event early next year as, rather than an ending, it could easily be the setting off point for the next plot. And, it would allow the delay in casting the Dornish.

And ha! Yeah, you pretty much have to have some sort of sadistic streak to keep reading.

Or just like to read books about people who have it worse off than we do.
There's something oddly reassuring about that.

I actually think that's the reason. Also...there's something weirdly inspiring about reading about characters who try to raise above their circumstances, even if they die in the attempt. Why do you think so many people love the Bible?

Eh, true. It's not a scene every leaves your mind, nor is it helped by the fact that you get bits and pieces of it repeated throughout the book by other characters. Martin just loves to relive it. In fact, just in case you forgot about it - it's told to you again in Feast.

And it is merciless. I almost want to warn people. Because seriously, if you thought Ned Stark's death in S1 was unwatchable or insanely painful, you've seen nothing yet. Because that is really nothing in comparison to what happens in S3. What happens in S3 is sort of the emotional equivalent of Seeing Red multiplied by 20 - assuming they do it. Curious to see if people stick with the series after it? It could very well be a game-changer for a lot of people.

I admittedly found that sequence disturbing and horrifying. Reminding me that Martin is a horror fantasy writer or dark fantasy. He makes Whedon and Tolkien look like wimps.

Regarding sadistic writers? The creators did the series because they wanted to do that scene - they couldn't wait to do Storm of Swords. LOL!
