Bunch-O-Stuff

* Wore myself out working in the garden this weekend. Planted 3 hydrangeas (after having to dig up the roots of the arborvitae that I had cut down this winter), basil, and mandevilla.

* Doctor Who - Read a theory (I think it was Elisi's?) that Clara is a TARDISGiven the gist of this weekend's episode, that looks like a good theory to me.)

*

Created by MyFitnessPal - Free Weight Loss Tools

(not sure why it's got 70lbs on there though)

* Once Upon a Time
Dudes, come on! Subtlety wouldn't hurt. You don't have to make Regina completely off her rocker delusional. I realize this show is pitched at a fairly young audience, but this is downright simplistic. Nuance would be okay! (And, seriously, Emma, they let you in on the plan all of five minutes before you were playing loose lips with Regina. Again, come on!)

* Game of Thrones
So much to do with Season 3, so much to do!

- The Seleyse/Stannis/Melisandre situation has a few hints of the Romanovs ala Alexandra becoming enthralled with Rasputin because of an ill child (or in this case a bunch of babies in a jar... and an ill child)

- Speaking of Stannis... over on Buffyforums it's been a surprise to discover that the "believe in prophecies! Believe in fate" Bangel crowd are at least consistent. Dorotea is arguing that Melisandre isn't leading Stannis down the rosepath to his own destruction because OMG, her fortune telling is true (Seriously, I'm shocked that anyone save the characters puts any faith whatsoever in Stannis Baratheon actually being The Prince That Was Promised. Surrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeee he is.

- Poor Arya. Arya: "I would be your family!" Gendry: "You would be my lady". Hearts break and embarrassed shippers hearts burst... because although that's not what the line really means... yeah, it sort of tweaks the shippers. (I felt it in the book as well, and she's even MORE of a kid in the book! It's definitely Wrong!Ship. But I still sort of fanwank that in 8 years...)

- Poor Sansa. The child is clueless.

- Hey, Loras, you shouldn't talk to your pick-ups about your granny's plans. That said -- your pick-up was hot!

- Jaime and Brienne knocked their bath scene out of the park. Wonderful scene.

- Please, Ygritte. Eat a few mammoth sandwiches (not in size but... I think meat is somewhat rare above the wall, and the girl needs a little meat on her bones).

- Speaking of, show, where are the mammoths?! I want a mammoth!

* The Borgias
Never have much to say about this show, but I am enjoying it. (Though I will add that Lucrezia's new hubby has a hairy ass.)

* Mad Men
Don's going to get his ass in trouble... and he's become a drunk.

And there's just something about Pete/Trudy. Trudy deserves so, so, SO much better than Pete, and yet somehow, though he does not deserve her, I find myself still rooting for the two of them. I don't know why, She could do so much better than that little toad, Pete. I did crack up at Stan cracking up at LOST's Ethan's ad pitch. I'm guessing Ethan was a Roger LSD pal. And, finally, Betty is all but unrecognizable.

* Scandal
Speaking of Wrong!shipping, Olivia and President Fritz are so wrong in so many ways, but damn the duo has chemistry.

I knew I recognized that insurance man on Mad Men, but I hadn't placed him as Ethan until you said so. Yay. It really is amazing how different January Jones looks. I do kind of root for Pete/Trudy too.

I am watching GoT but haven't read the books. Dorotea's insistence that maybe it'll turn out it really is Stannis who is the prophesied etc. is...well, as you say, she's consistent. And yeah, that bath scene was *excellent*, and I say that as someone who enjoys GoT but has rarely been riveted or moved by it.

The thing is, the book series is "A Song of Ice and Fire"... and Stannis is going to turn out to be the prophesied world-saving hero? Not the bastard princeling of the North (theorized. That's not even confirmed in the books (yet), but I totally buy the theory that Jon is the offspring of Rhaegar Tagaryen and Lyanna Stark) or the Queen of Dragonfire, Dany, in the South? No, it's going to be Stannis "Personality of a Lobster" younger brother Baratheon 'cause Melisandre, the religious fanatic quasi-conning alchemist, says so?

Really?

He's not even a POV character. (and I refuse to believe a guy who contemplates sacrificing babies is going to be 'a world-saving hero'. The fact that in the face of that, D, can is, of course, at least consistent.)

Apparently, all you have to do to be really convincing is claim you have a prophecy in your pocket.

Buffyforums - I'm sorry

Sorry!

I'm sorry I ruined your day. I shouldn't have used your post to vent my frustration with Dipstick. (I'm often annoyed with that guy, because he somehow always manages to find Spike wrong in everything, and willfully misinterprets everything the character does while doing backflips over his own faves.)

That has nothing to do with you. My bad. I'm sorry.

(I actually rather agreed with your post)

Oh! OK, sorry I freaked out. I've been in a touchy place lately (obviously from my reaction). I should have realized you weren't going after me. We're good.

I like Dipstick but she is way harsh on Spike. I do think she understates the Buffy side of things here too. Some of it is that Empty Places is kind of a...not hugely well-written episode so it's hard to talk about it without running into problems because everyone sort of looks bad, but bad in different ways and ways that are almost irreconcilable. I also get how it can be frustrating when someone is constantly down on a character as she is re: Spike.

Every now and again I even feel bad for dorotea for that reason -- because Angel is getting it bad. Of course, that's how he's being written, so....

No argument from me that it isn't the best written episode.

Frankly, it comes off as rather manipulative in terms of writing. I don't particularly buy that the Scoobs would actually do that (nor do I think it makes any sense how the complete 180 reversal takes place at the start of the next episode. The trip is so dizzying that it's hard to find it to be organic).

It's just that I've seen it argued in the past that this was the most terrible character assassination ever, and... er... no. It's bad writing. It's manipulative. And it isn't the best moment for the characters. But I've seen worse character assassinations (season 8 Twangel plot being a prime candidate. Though, I can't really feel bad for Dorotea. For the character formerly known as Angel? Yeah. But, I've seen the accusatory rants Dorotea has publically posted elsewhere, so I don't foresee my working up a lot of sympathy for her blind character loyalty when she is so free with posting blind frothing character hatred elsewhere.)

I go back and forth on how badly it plays. I think I don't mind the idea of it -- which is something close to what Maggie expresses (that there is an impasse that simply can't be resolved). I think it still could have used a few more drafts to get that across properly.

I agree though that as it stands, it's not terrible character assassination. There is worse. And yeah, Twangel.

I agree on Dorotea in reality, and it's certainly true that her attacks on other characters make her being cornered in on Angel not all that sympathetic. I can sympathize with the idea of it though, hard to be an Angel fan right now.

Poor Sansa. The child is clueless.

Yep.

This is only going to end badly, lol.

One day -- ONE DAY -- Sansa is bound to get a clue. I wouldn't advise holding my breath for it though. It's going to be a while. :)

There should be mammoths?

I feel all deprived now.

And yeah, the Bangel stuff on BF is amusing. They're tying themselves in knots trying to justify Twangel and accusing everyone else of 'blackwashing' while they happily throw Buffy under a bus.

[identity profile] shipperx.livejournal.com 2013-05-03 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the Wildlings had mammoths as well as giants, and I really do want a mammoth.

And, yeah, it is odd their tossing Buffy under the bus so hard. Strange.

Re: OUAT...

The way they're currently handling Regina is pissing me off, too :/ It's like she's this two-dimensional 100% evil idiot or something *sigh*

But as for Emma, I'm kinda getting the impression that she let it slip to Regina on purpose (or maybe at least subconsciously on purpose) because she doesn't WANT anyone going back to the Enchanted Forest. She maybe, at least some part of her, WANTED Regina to stop their plans so she doesn't have to fight/argue with her family, and still doesn't have to either go to the Enchanted Forest or lose them. :(

[identity profile] shipperx.livejournal.com 2013-05-03 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I don't understand why they want to make it so simplistic. It's okay for it to be more nuanced. They're turning Regina into a straight-up cartoon.
