From TVGuide.com:
American Horror Story: Asylum topped the Primetime Emmy Award nominations Thursday with 17, while Kerry Washington made history.
The Scandal star nabbed a Best Drama Lead Actress nomination, becoming only the fifth African-American actress to be nominated in the category and the first in 18 years. She's up against Connie Britton (Nashville), defending champ Claire Danes (Homeland), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel) and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men).
Homeland will try to defend its Best Drama Series crown against Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, House of Cards and Mad Men.
House of Cards also earned acting nominations for Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, but its fellow and Netflix series and former Emmy champ Arrested Development was snubbed in the Best Comedy Series race.
Modern Family will gun for a three-peat in Comedy Series against The Big Bang Theory, Girls, Louie, 30 Rock and Veep.
The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, will air Sunday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBS.

Date: 2013-07-18 02:32 pm (UTC)I don't get how Kerry Washington could be making history when she is the 5th African American actress to be nominated.

Date: 2013-07-18 11:08 pm (UTC)I can't say it's not realistic..because I know people like that. Unfortunately.
But ugh. Unwatchable. Do not understand the appeal.

Date: 2013-07-18 07:06 pm (UTC)These nominations are mostly exceptionally annoying. I loathe Clare Danes, Jeff Daniels and Lena Dunham (surely the most undeserving nominee EVAR). All of them stand for "fake" intelligent TV acting, which is actually mostly wanking and/or scenery chewing. Their histrionics always cut out the truly great, subtle performances in truly intelligent, ground-breaking series.
You're right about Clarke, though, as much as I love her. Fairley and especially Williams were far better in pivotal roles than she was.
All of this is to say I won't be watching the Emmys because FEH.

Date: 2013-07-18 10:56 pm (UTC)I feel like I ought to watch Homeland just for Mandy Patinkin (whom I adore), but on the whole... nothing for Person of Interest? Seriously?

Date: 2013-07-18 11:13 pm (UTC)Dany is a lot of fun, but if I were choosing supporting actress on acting I would have gone with Michelle Fairley or Maisie Williams. (For that matter, I'd give Hayden Pannetierre props over Connie Briton from Nashville (though I suppose CB's nom is to make up for all those years she SHOULD have been nominated for Friday Night Lights.)
Agreed.
I honestly do not understand the appeal of VEEP, Girls, and Downton Abbey.
But admittedly the emmy's have never made much sense to me.
Apparently...they forgot about Grey's Anatomy - when Chandra Wilson was nominated various years? Granted the same person being nominated five years in a row doesn't exactly count as five actresses.
