Book Meme gakked from

1) How many books do you have?
God, I couldn't begin to guess. I have a wall to wall bookcase in my study with yet more books stacked beneath the table and in the closet. I have sweater boxes of books beneath my bed. Boxes of discarded books in the garage, and that doesn't even begin to cover the books my mom was left with when I went to college.
2) What is the last book you bought?
"The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization" Non-Fiction, history of the rise and fall of Ancient Greece
3)What is the last book you read?
"Good Omens" by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
4) Five books that mean a lot to me.
"Just So Stories" by Rudyard Kipling (I pretty much memorized the stories "The Cat Who Walked By Himself" and "The Elephant's Child" when I was a kid.)
"1984" by George Orwell (brilliant insights)
"Trixie Belden and The Mysterious Mansion" (The first book that as a kid actually got me to read for pure pleasure rather than an assignment for school)
"Merlin's Keep" by Madeline Brent (The first "adult" book that I read --it wasn't racy but the version I had was some 500 pages long and was the largest book I had ever read to that point.)
"The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene (If I ever think I'm really intelligent, a half hour with this book and I realize that there are things I will never understand and can barely grasp.)

Date: 2005-05-16 04:44 pm (UTC)so many ideas for what to read next!
I aso have a book called "The Greeks" an ancient Penguin which I adore , the author contrasts the Sparten mother sending her son off to war saying " come back with your shield or on it" with the Greek poem
" some lucky Thracian has my noble shield
I had to run, I dropped it in a wood,
But I got off scott free
so hang the shield I'll get another just as good"
then remarks " there is something very attractive about the Greek outlook on life"
lol

Date: 2005-05-16 05:23 pm (UTC)A bit late in the interneths!world, I know
Date: 2005-05-19 04:49 pm (UTC)I find this very amusing. Mostly because (insert my being a snobbish intellectual here) what kind of person actually count their book-purchases?! As in:"Look mommy, I bought a book!!! Now I've got FOUR!!!"
But mostly I revel in having friended a lot of people who think reading is as essential as eating and find the question of "How many books do you own" to be on par with "How often have you ordered pizza".
Makes for an interesting flist...
