Exactly. Whether or not there's money involved in any given situation, people do NOT want to be told that they've been wrong, in their beliefs or their behavior. Most of us are very invested emotionally in being "right"; as the article says pile pride, money on top of that: add power politics. (Watch what happens in any liberation or civil rights movement.) Even people who are in reality nearer the bottom of the ladder (I'm looking at you Joe the Plumber) because they are so invested in the idea of their "potential" "someday" power and status.
Semmelweis took on his own profession; St Francis took on the Catholic Church, etc etc.
