Weekend Stuff
Nov. 11th, 2013 01:01 pmI was right about how late it would be to return home after a prime time game. Made it home a 2:15AM. Fun game, though. Scary until about the 4th quarter, when we finally pulled away.
Went to my nephew's tailgate party. Fresca+cheap vodka is not a cocktail that will receive my whole-hearted reccommendation.
Sunday was a bit of a wash considering I didn't make it to bed until after 2:30. The only constructive things that I accomplished Sunday: walking the dog, going to the grocery store, making meatloaf for dinner.
Sunday had gorgeous weather though. 75 degrees. Deep blue sky. Trees turning colors. Took Zoe around the lake for her walk and that was nice. (I also convinced her to give Willie, the lovely golden retriever down the street, a break and learn to walk with him rather than bark AT him.)
Watched Once Upon a Time last night. Generally, eh episode, and I'm going to just have to admit it. Belle is now annoying the ever living crap out of me, which is a shame because she was my favorite Disney Princess. Once's Belle looks like a candidate for a Lifetime Movie special. The thing with the Disney belle is that "Beasts" transgressions were shallow and Belle saw through the outter image. That is NOT the Rump/Belle story. Rumple is legitimately a dangerous guy. He's killed people. He murdered his wife. And... when Belle got her memories back, did she not KEEP her memories as Lacey? Because if so, what is she smoking? Just a few weeks ago (in show time/last season viewer time) she (Lacey) watched Rumple torture someone just 'cause he felt like it. Look, I'm not asking that Belle abandon Rumple or anything. I'm just asking that she be a few bazillion degrees less credulous! Seriously, Ariel, who is written as naive X 1000 seemed more wary of this box of releasing evil onto the world. ARIEL! Belle, meanwhile, is ready to hand it over to Rumple no questions asked and is most concerend with "our love" (Rule from soaps: Any character who non-ironically speaks of "OUR LOVE" is ridiculous. Just... ridiculous. People don't speak this way and it's eye-roll worthy when a character is written to do so.) Why couldn't she retrieve the box but at least have token insistance that Ariel take her with her to Neverland. Why just hand over the source of all evil in the world to a guy that, love him though she might, has proven over several hundred years to be RUTHLESS to a high degree. I'm not asking that Belle change, just that she be allowed common sense. Come on! Disney Belle had more common sense than Once's does!
I liked the Snow White/Prince Charming fight, though. See, it's fine to have the "our twu love is the twuest of the twu!", to believe it and hold true to it AND allow characters to actually be pissed off with each other sometimes and to point out each other's mistakes. That actually makes the relationship become more convincing not less. See they are still individuals. They have feelings. And they can be angry with each other from time to time and yet still love each other. It's more convincing that way.
Revenge has become entirely TOO soapy. I like soaps. But right now, they are running just pure, old fashioned soap plots. I liked the days when Emily did more interesting things. They went too far last year into the Initiative conspiracy thing, and are going too soap staple this year. At this point, I think they just need to expose the truth, and if it continues have the Revenge turn to other characters taking Revenge on Emily. And I'm not sure that won't be just pure soap either, but at least it would shake things up.
And...um... that's all I can think of at the moment. Hope everyone had a nice weekend.

Date: 2013-11-11 11:34 pm (UTC)The rest of it: meh, especially the lead, who is a terrible actress and beyond generic, and the scenery-chewing Madeleine Stowe, who is a terrible person in RL and also a stealth Latina who doesn't like to talk about it. Bleh.

Date: 2013-11-11 11:44 pm (UTC)You and me both. I'm having the same reaction. Also, it made no sense that she just calmly as you please, no questions asked had Ariel give the Pandora Box to Rumple and Regina. Does the woman still have amnesia?
Also agree on the Charmings - I rather liked their fight. And completely agreed with Snow. He deserved to be given the cold shoulder for a bit.
Re: REVENGE.
Yes, too soapy. And as you know, I also have a major weakness for soaps. But this series keeps going around in a circle. And nothing really happens. At this point - it's getting repetitive. You know there's a problem when daytime soap operas are moving at a faster pace than a nighttime series that is supposed to be a thriller.
I think they need to go back to the original model - which was introduce a new Revenge plot and new anti-hero each season. Possibly using some of the same characters, but not all of them.

Date: 2013-11-12 03:57 pm (UTC)The Charming fight worked for me. Snow had every reason to be pissed off with Charming. And yet she knows, just like we do, that he can be a noble dolt. He was acting with a good heart, he just was myopic. She loves him. She'll continue to love him. But, damnit, she's just pissed off right at the moment. That's realistic... and a relationship that I can root for.
Revenge has run out of story in its current incarnation. They either need to uptilt the format with others seeking revenge (even if its revenge against Emily) or just call it a day. They're clearly treading water.
