Heh.  This no doubt explains why in my dorm in college my assigned roomate's name was Lisa and one of my suite mates name was Lisa  (so in our suite we were Lisa, Lisa, Lisa and Susan) and why over at the book store they would regularly say when checking out (because I had an account there) "I know you're one of the Lisas in the architecture department, but I don't know which one."   And I once even had a wreck with someone with BOTH my first and last name (and this rather wigged out the cops. :)

My mom named my sister Jennifer in 1969. She was so pissed off when it became so popular the next year. Kind of like how I feel about the name Sophie--especially since everyone names their kid Sophia, so everyone thinks Soph's real name is Sophia.

The Jennifer trend appears to have been just as ubiquitous and of longer duration. It's basically the entire 1970s through the 1980s!

Emma and Sophie/Sophia seem to dominate the 2000s.

Okay, that is a LOT of Lisas for a lot of years straight, lol.

And then BOOM suddenly it's Jennifer in 1970.

It's probably a case of just seeing the #1 name. They probably rise and descend by increments as apparently I'm an off-peak Lisa with the rage for the name preceding me (but life experience has taught me that off-peak for name popularity doesn't mean that the name wasn't still prevalent).

And the Jennifer thing goes on for more than a decade!

These days it's apparently Emma or Sophia.

I remember checking you in to Writercon and having to figure out which Lisa Yourlastname you were, because there were two of you. :-)

Heh. I'm not surprised. Growing up, there were always multiple Lisas around. (TxVoodoo is Lisa also).

Wow! I knew certain names had/have periods of world (well, nationwide) domination, but I didn't realize it was quite so much like a name tsunami.

I'd say Jennifer is still hanging on fiercely in Michigan judging by what I remember of the names from Story Hour.

As someone noted on I09, the listed names generally seem to fun to non-exotic but feminine no-stigmatizing common names. (I knew a bunch of Jennifers growing up. Haven't noticed a bunch lately, but I'm not around many kids. Sophie/Sophia and Emma seems to come up a lot though).

I remember a phase where practically every child was either Tiffany or Amber. I don't think either is that popular today.

Whitney had a spike as well.

I don't know where "to fun" came from in my reply either. I meant something like "tend to be..." Go figure.

For a while Mary and Lisa were battling it out, with Michelle attempting to get a foot-hold (most likely due to the Beatle Song Michelle, My Belle). Then it switches to a fight between Jennifer and Jessica...evolving to Ashely vs. Jessica, Emily vs. Emma, Sophie, and a lot of Madisons.

Known a lot of Jennifers. Also there's a lot of Barbara's - three at my work place.

Guys names? Rob is awfully popular. So is variations on Bill. And Richard.

Oddly, though, other than a cousin of mine, I don't know that I've ever known a "Mary" (at least not a plain "Mary". I did grow up with a Mary Leslie and a Mary Catherine, both of whom were always referred to by both names never just by "Mary". Did know a Jenny and a Kimberly while growing up.

Growing up, we had a bunch of Bryan/Brian(s) and a few Mark/Marc/Marcus(s) in my class. Only one Bill that I remember (nice guy). And my closest male friends names were Lee, Seth, and Elliot.

Lots of Jon's in my family, though. I have/had two uncle Johns. My brother-in-law is named Jonathan (goes by Jon) and my nephew is also Jonathan (goes by Jonny).

Hmmm...have an Aunt Mary, but don't know any outside of that. Debbie was popular growing up.

Always liked the name Mark. But only knew a couple.

John? Didn't know quite as many...just a handful. More Rob's for some reason.
And Richard's.

Hee...my maternal great-great-grandmother was rather creative - she named her daughters Moss and Rocks. My mother was not quite as creative, my brother and I both have common names. But my brother's wife and his daughter have creative names, both Cherokee.
