TWOP just announced that it's closing up shop in May.

Wow. I mean, wow. Maybe people no longer use it because they can directly voice their opinion through Twitter? It's become obsolete with social media? What was its reasoning for closing? And will the archives of Spike hate survive? Nasty as it was, those posts were a fandom artifact.

It just wasn't making money anymore. NBC bought it some years back and then neglected it, and inevitably, it went downhill.

I never went there much, and from what I hear they could be pretty toxic anyway, but still... :/

A pity.
I never wrote there and was never there for any active fandom, except Game of Thrones.

But I often stumble on fandoms many years late, like with Firefly and Buffy and very recently Doctor Who, don't know where to go and where to find places where it's still alive or where I can find interesting discussions, even if they're old.

And TWoP never failed. I remember reading the longest Firefly thread ever, it had nicest people, fics, swoonage and it was basically a blast.
Well, with Buffy it wasn't so nice but I had much better luck finding active fandom elsewhere. :)

Same thing with Dr.Who now. There were superb recaps by Jacob, and lots of great episode discussions. I'm still about half way through on those, I guess I better hurry...

And I'll miss their Game of Thrones recaps and discussions...

I hope all that toxicity isn't just released into the atmosphere!

I think it's a real shame that they're taking everything offline. I may have hated the Buffy recaps, but Jessica's X-Files recaps were pure gold, and the Dawson's Creek recaps were equally amazing/hilarious. Sad to think that all of that won't be available anymore.

There needs to be an online archive for sites like this. I very rarely went there, and never posted, but it's internet history! We need to be able to document the first use of the word "ho-yay"! (Which I believe came from the Smallville recaps....)

I'm afraid I'm all "Ha, ha. Hoist on your own nasty petard!" I found the people running it - or at least the BtVS board - really and gratuitously nasty, so I'm glad to see them go. Note: This is clearly not the common opinion on Twitter, or at least my own little corner of it.

Well, that makes me sad, even though I don't really go there very much. But I do like to read the Survivor and Amazing Race forums once in a while. :-(

I was stunned. I still go there for spoilers and discussion for some of the shows that don't draw the crazy people.

Yeah, I go in instances where I'm a show dilletante. I may want to check up on the fandom discussion of a show but not want to actually delve into a fandom enough to actually find where it lived. TWOP was pretty good for that sort of thing.
