He is NEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeever Going To Finish This Thing

*headdesk*

From EW.com:

The Thrones-verse rumor mill went into overdrive Tuesday as outlets jumped on a comment attributed to George R.R. Martin’s editor that hinted the New Mexico-based fantasy author might write eight books for his epic Song of Ice and Fire saga instead of the long-planned seven...

You know, if he would stop adding extraneous subplots with a bazillion characters, he might could finish.  I cannot think the initial endgame was this damn complicated. Honestly, the "Mereneese Knot" could've been handled in (at most!) a quarter of the time and would have made just as much damn sense.  And don't even get me started on superfluous Greyjoys (who still have not been cast... showing exactly how 'essential' some of them came off as being...)

I did laugh at one of the comment-strings though.

>My Advice to George: Get an editor and LISTEN to that person.

>>He HAS an editor.  {...}  She did a Q&A the other day.  She basically says she never cuts anything and is a slave to George completely.

>>>>>Eventually Emilia Clarke will get around to freeing her.

I gave up on the books long time ago. My hopes of seeing this thing to the end are with the show.
I really like how they are cutting corners and make drawn-out and impossible-to follow plots streamlined and exciting.

Oberyn and his talk to Varys already made me much more interested in Dorne and Quentin subplots than the books ever did.
And how thankful I am for apparently cutting Brienne vs. Rorge and Biter story.

I hope they will finish everything in 7 seasons, just as they planned, and tell whatever story they manage, using Martin's hints.

The 'Merenese Knot' issue really pissed me off because -- what was the 'solution'? Dragons uncontrollable + Dany leaves mess in her wake This really took an entire book-stop novel?

REALLY?

I suspect that it some point for Martin it became more about Dany bathing and changing clothes and having sex than about anything else.
At least she's out of Mereen now, maybe now it'll go somewhere.

Oh yeah, and I'm already excited about Hizdar Lotrak (or whatever his name is) in the show, they made him a complex character whom Dany can play off against. So maybe even Mereen will be somewhat interesting.

Well at least newly cast Daario doesn't make me want to throw things. Dany's infatuation won't be nearly as irritating as it was in the books where Daario was nothing but cipher pain in the ass holding up the plot.

I couldn't even get past book 1. As far as I'm concerned, the show is the story.

And Book 1 is the most streamlined of the lot!

Seriously, by A Dance with Dragons, Martin will detour into a fifty-page historical discussion of the fall of the Roman Empire doom of ancient Valyria (think Pompeii).

I quit in the middle of the most recent book, when Dany was ruling Mereen and NOTHING ELSE WAS HAPPENING, not even the adorable Grey Worm/Missandei subplot to liven things up. Great television, but the books are hit or miss.
