Producers Talk Season 5 of Game of Thrones @ winteriscoming.net

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss talk about where we’re headed in the fifth season, the source material they will be drawing from{...}  With some characters on the television adaptation having already reached the end of their so-far published storyline, many are wondering how far the fifth season will extend into the two remaining books, and if the television series will continue to diverge from Martin’s written work.

Benioff and Weiss reveal, “We have talked to George extensively about where he’s going with the books, and will continue to do so. His books are the blueprint for the world we’re building. Ultimately the show needs to work on its own terms, and keep on moving. Our job is to square that necessity with George’s work to the best of our ability.

We’re not going in strict order because we can’t. We can’t adapt Feast and leave out half our characters. We’ll be drawing heavily from Feast and Dance in season 5.”

So what exactly can we expect in Season 5?

For one, Dorne. “There will be Dorne, and we’re excited about it. Who wouldn’t want to hang out in Dorne? They have admirable values and priorities. And have you seen Oberyn’s coat?”

We’ll also find out what Varys’ next move will be, after the bells made for a change in plans. “Early in the season, when speaking with Tyrion, Varys claims to be concerned primarily with self preservation. At the end of the season, though, his actions prove otherwise. He throws away the entire life he’s built for himself in King’s Landing to

save Tyrion’s life.

Now what? … “Now what?” will become eminently clear in season 5.”

And the fantasy aspect won’t be diminished any time soon. “The dragons aren’t getting any smaller. Melisandre’s still sorceressing, the giants are more pissed than ever, and Jaime’s almost done building his jetpack. So… yeah, the fantasy’s not going away. It is a fantasy show.”

[Me]  You know, a lot of fanboy comments and griping just make me roll my eyes.  But, I have to admit that I agree with this comment on on that site:

>>>The next season is going to be Feast + Dance. Feast and Dance, together, are one excellent 900-page book. It’s just too bad they were published as two books totaling 2100 pages.   D&D are doing what George’s editor should have.<<<

Err....  I agree.

There's a ton of needless material in these two books which adds to the 'lost the plot' feel, even though there IS a lot of interesting stuff tucked in there.  (I'd also add that the other problem is that Dance doesn't have an ending (Except with Jon's plot...sorta.  It's a cliffhanger too (I think) but it still has a climactic feel too it. ) Generally, the feel at the end of Dance (to me) is that it cuts out just as Dance finally reaches the climactic scenes.  It's like -- 'blackout''.  Other than Jon's plot, it didn't feel like cliffhanger so much as holding off on giving the climaxes set-up in the book.  JMHO.)

Well, they have two seasons greenlit, during which they'll be doing books 4&5, I suppose. Maybe GRRM will have finished Book 6 before they get to the end of season 6.

Though of course he'll have to have finished it in time for them to write scripts, etc, etc.

They're just going to have to make it up for themselves, aren't they?

I think they're going to have to finish the series themselves. They're good for this year and at least the start of next.

Hopefully (maybe. Absurdly optimistically) the next book may come out next year so they could be covered for all of season 6. But the final season 7 (which is all the primary actors are contracted for all the producers are contracted for, etc)... no way in heck is the show not all on their own. No how, no way is Martin finishing the series ever ahead of the show. He's already floating "There may be 8 books instead of 7" and with as many years between books as he has now...? We'll be lucky if he ever manages to finish.

Frankly, I think he'd find it a relief that the show finishes first. It gets the "GRRM is not your bitch" crowd off his back, and he gets a trial run finale so anything fans gripe about/hate (because it is fandom and a serial and there's absolutely no way that it won't be griped to death) he can then change stuff when he (if he ever does) write and end to the books to fix the fans primary complaints.

They've all claimed for ages that he told the show's producers the end game. It'll just boil down to two different versions of the end. They won't align perfectly and he'll have a chance to revise (should he ever, ever, ever finish) so there will simply be two canons from a certain point on.

Plus, honestly, with the way he proliferates characters and endless backstory, what he's writing has become pretty much unfilmable except for the actually important bits.

Already it seems like the Dorne plot is potentially more interesting(from being edited and characters potentially being compiled) than it was in the book (where quite frankly my reaction upon being introduced was "who in the hell are these people and why should I care?" And don't even get me started on the endless proliferation of Greyjoys. (Still glad not a one of them have been cast. Not only do I enjoy watching the fanboys squirm... but honestly I more and more skipped those chapters because they were boring as hell). Seriously, Martin doesn't seem to 'get' the fanfic rule of "the readers are here for the characters that brought them here not for endless newbies." I would skim through these chapters trying to reach any character that I RECOGNIZED.

If Jaime's 'jet-pack' sends him to Dorne so that there's some tie to the rest of the canvas, I'm all for it. Same goes for Varys decision in the finale to go to Essos rather than disappear for two books only to arrive at the end of ADwD for his big surprise (which gives away some of his plan. This way, I think we may be allowed to see him working on his plan rather than springing it. Because he does have a plan... (and seemingly backups and contingencies 'just in case'...)

Ooh, interesting. I knew Varys must have a plan (and also lots of cash stashed away in other countries, in case he ever had to flee without even a change of clothes. Like now.)

Varys plays deep and long and is patient.

FWIW, it was his editor floating the 8 books thing...but yeah. That doesn't give me any hope either :D

After the season finale, there was a lot of angst about 1 character not appearing. Me? I didn't like the character anyway and think it adds nothing.

I agree with that fanboy comment. Being George RR Martin's editor must be the most thankless job in the world. What I'm wondering: if GRRM doesn't finish the sixth book in time for the TV show, and the TV show does what GRRM told D&D was going to happen, would book sales go down, because everyone knows all the spoilers?

It would be great to see Varys in Essos doing things, maybe replacing yet one more unnecessary and new character, or even Illyrio.
Show!Varys is much more charismatic and sympathetic than in the books, the more I see of him the better.

Petir, though... I like him more in the books, he's more subtle there and less muahaha.
