This is sad, I had to look up Doran Martell - to remember who he is. And I just read the chapter where Doran Martell talks to the Sand Snakes and tells them his plans.

The problem with GOT is it has waaay too many characters and points of view to keep track of.

I was explaining the book to my brother and mother.

Me: Each book has about 20 points of view, each point of view is a different chapter and takes place in a different region of the world. It's sort of like reading 10 fantasy novels at once. And each pov ends on a cliff-hanger, but by the time you get back to that pov, you've forgotten what it was.

Mother: You realize you just talked us out of reading these books, right?

I know which is why it is amusing and ridiculous to read the conniption fits on GOT sites whenever a character is bypassed or eliminated.

Dudes, the BOOKS needed to have eliminated characters themselves. It ridiculous how many extraneous subplots and needlessly additional characters that there are. It's like he refused to use characters for more than one purpose when, really, he SHOULD have.

Agreed. I'm losing track of some of the characters. And they all have similar names. The one's in Mereen especially. Between Dany and Tyrion's chapters, and Jon Snow and Theon's - I'm getting confused as to who is who. The TV series is actually easier to follow. From the casting - I'm guessing they may condense some of Tyrion's bit.

The man overwrites. He needs an editor.

And then there's the subterfuge re: who is who.

Is Young Griff really Aegon? Is the Septa with him really The Viper's sister or sometone else... (Read that theory recently and... huh. Okay...)

Then there are all these theories about mechanations at "Old Town" and I'm like -- bejeebus, there was actually a point to that stuff? Because I was bored out of my skull and there was no obvious point to it and are they SURE there's a point to it or are they just hoping that there is?

While I can't even remember "Old Town". I think I skimmed that chapter, unless it hasn't happened yet. (I'm 60% of the way through, Dany has just flown off with Drogon.)

The Viper has a sister? Okay.

I'm having enough troubles keeping track of the actual plot threads...how in the heck do people keep track of the hypothetical ones?

At least I was able to figure out that Abel was Mance Raider in the Theon chapters - which have become rather suspenseful, although I have a feeling it will end badly. That's the other issue I have with these books - GRRM teases a lot but does not follow through. Will Tyrion and Jorah meet up with Dany? Doesn't appear to be happening any time soon. Will anyone get to their destination?

I do however have hopes that the Bolton and Freys will get slaughtered - just not when or by who. At this rate it may be by each other in the middle of a snow-storm. Sad - I'm rooting for the slaughter of a group of people. But the Boltons and Freys have become one-dimensional villains, and rather annoying ones at that - I just want them gone. Plus less characters to keep track of.

Alexander Siddig! Yes!

(I didn't have any problem remembering Doran Martell, but several other characters named had me scratching my head.)
