I'm not making much effort to watch the airing in the UK.  Too much trouble.  I'll wait for the US airing.

That said, I do keep track of the UK recaps, and going by (multiple) summaries I've read, my impression is that Mary has now decidedly tipped over into astonishingly heartless territory for even saying half of the things she apparently said to Edith in this weeks episode.

Honestly, how much effort does it take to NOT say horrendous things to someone in distress?

I don't know why people don't stop her. And by people I mean her parents who are also Edith's parents. I guess that don't want to stick their noses between the two sisters, but if you see your oldest daughter being so mean to the other you should at least say something.

I love Mary, but she's really awful with Edith, especially in these episodes.

She's been beyond terrible to her. It's gone so far that it's taken me right out of the story as it comes across as having more than a whiff of the writers driving a particular plot line a la the AR in BtVS, IMO.
