I am guilty.

Somehow I read the articles about GamerGate and the mention of a Baldwin and thought "youngest Baldwin brother..."

Today, I actually noticed the name attached to the brouhaha was Adam Baldwin.  Therefore, not a "Baldwin Brother".

After a quick google of his name to see his reaction once the GamerGate misogynist hate-fest blew up over the internets, I find I am now disgusted with the guy.

Turns out there appears to have been little irony involved with regards to his Jayne Firefly character or his far-right Chuck character.  What appears to have been the addition was the warm fuzziness attached to the Chuck persona.  Otherwise, he seems to been playing his own uber-macho(in his head) fantasy self.

And he doesn't seem at all fazed by the misogyny of Gamergate.

Yuck!

Adam Baldwin is...not really awesome. I made the mistake of following him on Twitter for a while, and I finally had to unfollow, because it was just awful. I've had friends meet him at conventions, and they say he's really nice to fans, but that doesn't really make up for some of his really distasteful opinions.

The quick google to his responses to the blow-up of Gamergate made me deeply regret ever having liked his Chuck character. That character isn't funny any more when I realize he's way further to the right and a whole lot less reasonable. It now feels like a way of soft selling a really, really bad attitude.

That's exactly what I did. I think I followed him for about a day, and I had to unfollow. It was AWFUL.

I'll think of him through his characters.

I generally don't let real-life politics of actors affect how I feel about the characters they play. I'm watching the character, not the person playing him.

That said, "what enigmaticblues said." I followed him on Twitter for a short time, but quickly realized that he's not only a right-winger, but an incredibly ignorant right-winger. I mean, he doesn't even seem to understand the things he's advocating.

So, while I'll probably still watch shows that he acts in, I'll never go to a convention to meet him. I don't need to meet his kind of person.

Yeah, one of those actors I have no interest in following or knowing anything about or ever meeting in person...is Adam Baldwin. (Took me a minute to figure out who he was actually, I'd forgotten about him.) Remember a friend decided to follow him on Twitter, because she loved Jayne, and his comments in the Whedon commentaries. And got the shock of her life - apparently he's a more than wee bit on the ultra-right end of the political spectrum. Not to mention misogynistic and racist as all get out.

I think a lot of Firefly fans were rather uncomfortably surprised when they decided to follow him on Twitter. Twitter has gotten more celebrities in trouble. Voicing one's political views in a public forum is all well and good - if you aren't attempting to promote yourself to fans so they will see you in your next movie or tv series or pay to meet you at a con. The smart ones don't do that.

Adam Baldwin is a tool. I try to keep him separated in my head from the characters he plays. :P

There's someone on my flist who's pro-Gamergate, and if they didn't post so seldom, I'd be severely tempted to defriend them. (Not just for that; it's been obvious for quite awhile that our worldviews are minimally compatible.) The next frothing rant about Anita Sarkeesian they link to, I just may do it. :P

When I first got on Twitter I got crazy adding all the Whedonverse alumni to my feed, including Baldwin. It didn't take long to see that he was using Twitter to spread uber-conservative conspiracy theories, so I quickly unfollowed him. When I found out he was one of the voices of GamerGate I wasn't the least bit surprised because it sounded like something a sexist asshole would say.

I probably am the only person to have benefitted from GamerGate, because it perfectly illustrated the subject I'm doing my senior thesis on. Thanks, assholes in gaming, for giving me plenty of evidence to support my argument!

Also, if you want any links about GamerGate, let me know. I have a really cool one that compares it to the Tea Party movement!
