Hurricane Update
Jul. 10th, 2005 07:37 pmIt's just now getting really windy here. The remnants of the Hurricane at around 9pm.
My worst part of the day was DIGGING THE DAMN DITCH! That's right, digging a ditch along the side of the house to forstall the kind of flooding I had with Ivan because it cost me $500 to replace the carpet. Mom and I kept sayint we were digging a $500 ditch.
Since no one is at the beach house we don't know how it fared.
Mom and Dad haven't called Monroeville since it hit there. Although looking at the radar the eye (yet again!!) went right through it (Damn).
We're expecing flooding rains and some winds (it is windy here now. My poor dark red crepe myrtle is speading red confetti all over the grass) but, hopefully, we shouldn't be TOO bad unless there are tornadoes (or flooding. So maybe our $500 ditch isn't in vain) We have a good chance of losing power tonight though (combination of sodden ground and high wind usually equals toppled trees). But thus far all is well.
Mom and Dad are trying to call Monroeville to see how things are there.
ETA: My parents can't get any calls through. Seems that both land lines and cell towers are down in their hometown.

Date: 2005-07-11 06:26 pm (UTC)And everything came out well. No flooding. Didn't even lose power. My parents finally got a call through to Monroeville and while there's no power there and there's debris in the yard, their home sustained no real damage, no fallen trees, etc.
Now, we only know nothing about the beach house. It wasn't in the eye but it was within 30 miles of the eye and we have no one down there to check on the house. However, hopefully, since it's a few blocks from the coast we escaped any flood damage.

Date: 2005-07-11 06:28 pm (UTC)Yeah, but you know what they say -- the worse the hurricane season, the colder the winter. :P
All is well, no damage suffered, no power outage, just some howling wind and my poor crepe myrtle's bloowm are strewn all over the yard.

Date: 2005-07-11 06:29 pm (UTC)We seem to have weathered the storm well. Only thing in question is the beach house.

Date: 2005-07-11 06:31 pm (UTC)The city has a fairly substantial power outtage, but I never lost power at my house and my office also has power (unfortunately, that couldn't be said for all the traffic lights between home and work so it was a slow commute). Overall we came through well.
Take care.
