Reaction to AtS Ep 22 Spoilers
May. 1st, 2004 05:01 pmCredit to the summary goes to pandora on Mythical boards and they're also available on BAPS and Sparklies. I've just taken snippets.
Spike goes into a tough-looking bar… where he reads his own verse in a poetry slam.
That's kinda cute.
But what's with Anne being Gunn's sister?
Spike asks Angel if the Shanshu prophecy will come true and one of them will become human after this. Angel says neither of them will survive, so it doesn’t matter.
Er... isn't sort of the point that you die THEN you live? Sheesh. As far as I'm concerned, Spike gets the shanshu because absolutely no one ever thinks it can possibly be him. Using Whedonverse logic it IS him. And just because it can no longer be Angel (Angel signs away his chance for shanshu in the episode) doesn't mean it can't be Spike. Seriously have they ever proven that Spike doesn't fit each and EVERY criteria for it? No. All they did was having everyone from the Sr. Partners, to Lindsay just assume it. And, Spike being Spike? give him a limitation and he's just going to tear it down and do it anyway. So really, :P ME. Spike rules. :)
At the same time, Spike sneaks into the Fell sanctuary, where he hears a baby crying. {...} Meanwhile Spike rescues the baby and fights off the Fell demons.
Spike saves the baby. Yay. Spike is a damn good hero... and he hasn't compromised himself the way that Angel has. I'm really starting to wonder about the message of this whole season. It seems to me with Angel's actions. . .is the show validating the "at any price?" Is ruthlessness REALLY the only way? I'm not sure that Angel HASN'T been corrupted because he sacrifices everything --but Connor -- including honor to do this. And there's such a ruthlessness to it that, honestly, I'm not sure that Angel hasn't been compromised by the fight. At any rate, Spike sees uncompromised to me and so I can deal with it. I don't hate Angel like I do Buffy. . . but he seems to have taken up Buffy's mantle of "really shitty battle plans."
I'm not really sure that ME has made their case that Angel is really winning any sort of war with this, it's just another battle. . .and so I'm not sure that I buy into his "means justifies the end."
Still, Spike saves a child and is loyal throughout, so I can deal, I guess.
And he SO does not die! I don't care what's on screen!
Back at the bar Lindsey washes blood off his hands and thanks Lorne for his help. Lorne says he still doesn’t trust Lindsey, and pulls out a gun and shoots him. Lindsey has just enough time to say how indignant he is that he’s been killed by a flunky (and not by Angel himself)… and then he dies.
I still hope this makes more sense on screen than it does here because I'm still going "huh?"
And did they ever explain how/why Angel killed Drogyn? Is it "means justifies the end?" Because that's another "huh?" for me too.
Meanwhile Vail slams a dagger into Wes’ gut. Wes uses his last bit of strength to toss Vail across the room. Illyria arrives and holds Wes, realizing he’s dying. She ask if he’d like her to lie to him now, and he says yes… so she pretends to be Fred, saying she loves him and it won’t be long until they can be together. She kisses him, and he dies. Then Vail returns, inviting Illyria to take her best shot.
So Wes even fails at his mission? Poor Wes. Again I'm just not sure what the message behind this episode IS. I am wondering if those who signed onto W&H last year really DID get corrupted. No, they didn't 'go evil' but they each lost something.
As far as I can tell the only one who goes untainted. . . is Spike.
Then there’s a thunderclap and an army of monsters closes in while a dragon circles above. Despite his wounds, Gunn wants to fight.
Gunn isn't dead. Yay!
Spike asks Angel what his plan is, and Angel says he wants to slay the dragon. Then the demons charge, and he swings into battle.
And now we know why Angel can't seem to get over Buffy. He has her shitty battle planning skills!
Hope this episode feels more complete than it reads. . . and I don't care if it looks like the Battle for Helms Deep combined with the Battle for Gondor... Spike lives through it!
Either that or he gets the shanshu. Because, damnit, he STILL fits all the criteria of "vampire with a soul!"
And I hope that the dialog gives a bit more character development than the summary. The summaries have been quite "just the facts" (though I appreciate them) and to quote Mies Van der Rohe, God is in the details
