Yes, I'm Still a JM Fan.
Jul. 21st, 2005 05:12 pmI guess I'm just not 'cool.' I still like JM. Sorry. I'll just be the 'out of it' nerd in the corner.
Smallville isn't exactly a huge career move. I honestly never gave a damn about the show but, so what? Who am I to judge? It's work. It might be fun, and I'm pedestrian enough to be okay with that. Besides, I don't watch anything else on Thursday.
If you've entered the "I don't give a shit about JM" phase (or the "I actively dislike JM" phase). I understand. But, I'm going to be lame enough to still talk about him. (Er, guess it shows that I'm still grumpy. Apologies. It'll pass. And no. None of that is directed at any one person, just peevishness at the general direction of the rhetoric in the remnants of the fandom. If I've miffed someone, I'm genuinely sorry. It's not personal. No intent to offend).
ETA: Wrongda is reporting that a WB rep denied that JM is going to be on Smallville. WB rep also said thaqt the WB had offered to do AtS movies but Joss turned it down. Who is shocked by this? And who can tell who is trying to pin it on who more? It's the most mentioned movie no one ever wanted to make. Well, other than "Superman Lives."Lisa (the one that isn't me) posted some more info on JM on Smallville: http://www.livejournal.com/users/voodoo_in_tx/273640.html
So... I googled. This is what I came up with:
Vril Dox) was once a scientist on the planet Colu. Because of his genius, Dox was allowed to serve the planet's tyrants. Attempting to overthrow the tyrants and rule Colu himself, Dox had invented a teleporter. Discovering his plan, the tyrants used the teleporter on Dox, apparently killing him. But Dox's mind survived and eventually came to Earth when it was found by "The Amazing Brainiac"(aka Milton Fine) a circus mentalist with latent mental powers. Dox fought to control Fine's body and while doing so found that combining his and Fine's mental powers allowed for amazing feats that caused several psychic battles with Superman. Fine's identity was almost destroyed by Dox who now completely controled the body and had great mental powers, partly due to an implant supplied by Lex Luthor. Brainiac's body and mental powers became even stronger after Luthor tried to control him in a psionics lab, where Brainiac instead managed to control Luthor and other LexCorp employees.

Date: 2005-07-21 10:36 pm (UTC)Actually, since I've had a chance to cool down and come to a bit of acceptance that it's Smallville JM's going to be in, I've actually gotten excited about the role he'll be playing. I kinda, sorta remember Brianiac from the comics I read several generations ago when I was young, and think it'll be a cool role for JM. In the comics, Brianiac was bald and green. I wonder if JM will be bald and green by season's end. *g*

Date: 2005-07-21 10:38 pm (UTC)If they don't subject Welling to red tights, could they spare the green? And we JUST got past the baldness!

I love how people kept clarifying that. "Not our Lisa! The other Lisa!"
btw, from what I can figure from Smallville spoilers and such, it seems they're going with this part of the Brainiac canon more:
http://supermanica.info/wiki/index.php/Brainiac
Specifically, the spaceship and the making him look more human so as to spy better.
My hubby's happy about it!

Date: 2005-07-22 01:26 am (UTC)Ah well, for a certain time period it was an extremely popular name. In college my dorm assignment had in our suite (I kid you not) Lisa, Lisa, Lisa, and Susan. When guys would call (and it being college and people frequently not knowing the last name) we'd have to ask them to DESCRIBE the Lisa they wanted. :)
Oh, and in my architecture class we had TWO Lisas. Both tall and blonde. When we'd got to the art supply store (where we both had accounts and, it being architecture school, we were there every freaking week) the clerks would point and say "I know you're Lisa, I just don't remember which one." :)
Re: Brainiac. I know virtually nothing of Superman lore. I just hope that it's an interesting role. Campy fun is okay. And I'm hopeful that he's neither bald nor green. (Hey, he'll be loved if he can just killed Lana. I know that much about the Smallville fandom). >:)

Date: 2005-07-22 12:23 am (UTC)In all seriousness, having a passion for something is what drives my happiness. I use the word "obsession" to describe my little phases, but "passion" is the more correct term. I'll be absolutely devoted to one series/tv show/actor/character/author/musician, etc., and I'll just eat up everything I can get my hands on with regard to that passion. And then, eventually, I stumble upon something else that takes its place. The only thing that is really, truly depressing to me is not having a fascination that brings joy to my days.
So, guess what - if you still feel passionate about JM, that damn well makes you cool. You're enjoying something and reveling in it, and fuck any jaded asshole who tries to bring you down because of that. They're the miserable ones.
no subject
Date: 2005-07-22 12:41 am (UTC)Still, I remember my old obsessions fondly and with love. The passion just isn't there anymore.

Date: 2005-07-22 01:19 am (UTC)I'm not big on "Smallville" but I did tend to enjoy the last five minutes of it I usually managed to catch ever week when it was on before AtS... and I can certainly think of more unwatchable shows he could have gotten a part on, and this role at least looks interesting. Hopefully something that will let him stretch himself a bit.

Date: 2005-07-22 02:10 am (UTC)I agree wholeheartedly with your post. I love JM and Spike. I'm grateful JM has a job on another high profile show. I actually like Smallville and I love Lex!
If someone no longer cares for JM, then they should do themselves a favour and just *move on*. Don't rain on my parade - I still love the guy and don't call me a loser for my passion and my views.

I like JM. There, I have said it. I think he's a nice, good looking, and very talented person and yes I am proud to be his fan.
Does that make me a freak? *shrug* so be it.

Date: 2005-07-22 07:48 am (UTC)it drives me insane when people claim to be over something but then redfuse to do the decent thing and sod off to the boards of their new obsession. Instead too many of then hang around to bitch and whine and try to convince other fans to agree with them
Sod it, I'm here for the long run. James is way more than a pretty face, a cool coat, a striking dye job. Hes an amazingly talented actor and one whose career is going to be worth watching for many years to come.
Oh and another thing * his* career , his choices .. I get pissed off beyond belief with people running down his manager, his acting choices , his lifestyle... whatever.
You know the guy has done pretty well so far making his own calls.
hmmm
