Hmmm... it definitely sounds promising, but I think I'll hold off on my squee until they're a little further along in the process.
Minear isn't a bad choice at all for a Spike movie (though I would have loved to see Greenwalt do it), and I can certainly understand the timing involved here, since "The Inside" was just cancelled. Thing is, at this point, they're going to have to work around JM's schedule on "Smallville" too -- especially with the hair issue.
I figure that with a script (and a deal needing to be done, we're talking many months before they'd get around to filming). But, yeah, I'll deal with my conflicted feelings if I ever hear that it's an actual 'go.'
If they don't have a script yet, and no firm deals with anyone, I'd say that they're nine months to a year away from filming if everything goes perfectly. Which it probably won't. Smallville will be over by then--I'm pretty sure it's on its last legs, especially considering what it's up against this season. In the unlikely event that Smallville gets picked up for a sixth season, they could probably schedule a Spike movie for summer break.
That said, I'll believe it when I see a signed contract.
No signed contract (and I'll worry about my conflicted feelings regarding a movie if there ever is one, but Herc did call Minear to confirm the rumor and Minear says that the rumor is in fact true, so, actually Joss is putting forward some tiny bit of effort... which is more than I would have credited him for.
