Bones

shipperx: (Scully - skeptic)

DB has lost weight which is good. He isn't shaving well, leading to a totally weird shadow on his upper lip and chin. The hair... we need Angel hair jokes.

Cast doesn't seem to have gelled yet. And the bicker/banter doesn't seem to be working (though DB gives it a good college try).

Mulder and Scully they're not.

And at some point I've developed a problem with overly loud musical backgrounds. (It's actually one of the problems I run into on my attempts to watch Veronica Mars. Sorry) If I want a music video, I'll watch music video. These things should be used SPARINGLY not constantly as scene transitions. It's a pet peeve of mine. That kind of use of music is just a bit too twee and 90210ish.

Okay, so FBI boss is a Skinner rip-off? Come on, I wants me some real Skinner, not a Skinner sorta-kinda-lookalike!

So Prudence is emotionally distant (gee, think the name would have given that away?) My problem is that the actress seems a bit... flat. (And the "I don't know what that means" is a tad annoying).

Thus far DB has been one of the better things about the show.

Still a chemistry deficit between DB and Prudence (though I did just snort an unintended laugh at DB's line of "I'm a dead duck." Funny only in a fandom context but still - Bwha!)

Mulder/Scully/Skinner scene. But you're not SKINNER! Skinner was way better looking. And need I say that Prudence is not Scully? I heart Scully and her being badly ripped off is something which always annoys me. (I'll forego a DB/DD comparison because apples/oranges).

Ugh! More with the overbearing musical background! Stop it.

So did Prudence become a cop and I missed it somewhere?

Sorta surreal shot of the funeral (but AGAIN with the music!)

How freaking STUPID is Prudence supposed to be that she doesn't know what a best selling novel is? Is she supposed to be autistic or something?

Too bad there isn't much chemistry between DB and the girl.

Overall... Bones isn't bad, and if chemistry can be developed and the rough edges knocked off so that the cast gels, it might prove a reasonably watchable police procedural... as long as they refrain from the X-Files parallels so that I'm not stuck comparing it to a better product.

I wasn't enthralled with the writing. I thought DB was good, lead girl MAY be ok if she ....gets something? Anvils need to stop, and writing needs to scintillate a bit more.

Yeah, the writing wasn't exactly inspiring. All in all, it seems to have lifted elements from X-Files only without the tension and good dialog, and then slicked it up (and I sort of like the near artlessness of early X-Files). Basically, it's more or less been there, done that. Wish I still had Season 3 X-Files.

I only caught the last half of the show, and it only left me with two impressions. 1) DB act like Angel (tastes just like chicken sorta thing). 2) Those people working with "Bones" are awfully young. Are they supposed to be expert professionals too? And pretty. A group of pretty, young experts.

I get tired of everyone on American TV always being young and pretty. I'd have been more kindly disposed to it if they'd thrown a token "real" looking person in a feature role.

But I'll still probably watch it if I'm home, just for DB.

After I hit 40, I realized that everyone in their 20s looked too young to me *grin*

I suppose SOME of them could actually be in those jobs?

I can take the young and attractive it it's unique and/or interesting. The cast seemed a bit too cookie-cutter though.

That's pretty much exactly what I thought of the show when I saw it... plus I thought that DB was just a bit on the bland side (though that may have a whole lot more to do with the character than with his acting).

Oh, yeah, and the "best friend" character and actress annoyed the hell out of me. She's *awful*. I hope they write her off the show in quick order.

The one with the Bjork ponytails? Yeah. Annoying. The show seems salvageable, sevicable, and a bit bland. It could work... possibly. But I'm not really grabbed by it.

It made me miss the actual Mulder and Scully.

Didn't the FauxSkinner's office sets look a lot like X-Files to you?

Isn't NotSkinner the Skinner-esque guy from JAG? I didn't watch JAG very much, but it kind of looked like him.

I kept thinking so, but I never watched JAG, so I'm not sure.

Yeah, I thought so. I kept thinking hiring a Skinner character was pushing the similarities just TOO far. They could have at least cast someone who didn't LOOK like Skinner.

Non-Skinner is the guy from JAG.

It was *so* nice to see DB again :) The girl - I don't know yet.

I like the little guy assistant.

And the music videos bugged me too.

Glad I'm not the only one annoyed by the music video part of it.

Temperance has a lot more personality in Kathy Reich's books, which this is supposedly based on, so hopefully they'll tone down the "science geek that doesn't understand pop culture" in future episodes, but after the dearth of watchable TV last year, there are 7 shows I found interesting this fall, so that's of the good. This has potential, so I'm hoping the characters will develop in future episodes.

The actress didn't impress me either.

I thought it was an enjoyable enough way to spend an hour, but it's definitely not appointment TV. And I'm glad other people are bugged by her being sooooo stupid about the NYT list. I thought maybe I was just being overly sensitive, since I'm in publishing.

At that point I thought they had definitely crossed the line between not being pop culture savvy and someone who probably was undiagnosed Asperger Syndrome!

I agree the writing does need improvement. Hopefully the next episodes will get better if not than it will not be watchable.

It's not unsalvageable. But it's not quite there yet, either.

My thought is that everyone on the show including the writers were trying too hard. I haven't seen a pilot that screamed pilot so loud in long time. I think the overuse of 'I don't get that' was poor exposition. Hello, I'm the geek don't let the fact that I look like a TV star fool you, I have very poor social skills because my parents disapeared when I was 15. What little knowlege of pop culture I had I had left I traded for my PhD.

I didn't 'see' any of this in her, she just kept saying it. Where as all DB said was- Hello I'm a hero seeking redemption, but hey I'm not Angel, this time I get to throw around the pop-culture refs. :) actually, I agree he was the best guy on the show.

This was rather my reaction as well. I liked it well enough to give it one more try and see if they work the kinks out; but it all seemed so "look at me, I'm a new show"

It did seem as if they were trying too many things at once.

Gee -- my impression is that it was too much like all the other forensic procedural shows on now. Other than that, I liked it -- I have a soft spot for the Deschanel girls (they're like throwbacks -- v. sardonic in an old-fashioned Rosalind Russell/Eve Arden sort of way), and I liked Prudence sticking it to DB's character. Still, you're right -- it has yet to coalesce into something that isn't massively derivative of every other show on now or that came before it, and you're also right about the supporting cast (v. weak).

At any rate, it's nice to see DB in the sunlight -- and so thin! Don't like the facial hair, though.

Well, I guess I wasn't paying that much attention after all -- that would be Temperance, not Prudence.

From: [identity profile] shipperx.livejournal.com
Or is it that I didn't pay attention. For all I know her name might be Charity. :)

From: [identity profile] shipperx.livejournal.com
Heh. Well, I knew it was something like that. Then again I wasn't paying enough attention, she could have been named Charity for all I knew.

Heh. Well as I don't WATCH any of the other forensic procedurals, that's not a similarity I'd notice. :)

Not to be too picky, but the lead character's name is Temperance, not Prudence.

I got the feeling the cast was forcing things a bit, the "squint" banter was a little much and there really isn't much chemistry yet between DB and the lead. That scene at the shooting range made me squirm, and not in that good way.

But I'm willing to give it a shot for another week or so.

Heh. Clearly, I wasn't paying that much attention. :)
