Sick Kitty
May. 22nd, 2007 09:34 amMy thirteen year-old cat has always been in the best of health, so I didn't really worry about leaving her to go on vacation. And I didn't worry when my sister went by to feed my cat but she (my sister) never saw the cat (my cat has always been exceedingly shy of people she doesn't know well. She'd come out if my sister was there and I was there, but just my sister? It's common behavior for my cat to stay out of sight under those circumstances).
When I came home, however, the cat was behaving strangely. Usually she rushes out to meet me whenever I come home, but after my vacation she didn't come running. I had to go in search of her, and she hissed at me when I found her hiding under the clothes in my closet. I pinned it down to her being pissed off about my having been absent for a week. Usually she just becomes clingy, but she can occasionally become pissed so I picked her up and loved on her, which she seemed to enjoy.
But, she continued to behave oddly. For instance, the thing is addicted to Whiska's Cat Treats. Usually all I have to do is shake the bag and she comes running. I shook the bag... but no running. She eventually arrived but barely looked interested in the treats, which is unusual. And, when I tried to brush her she was excessively weird about it, hissing if I neared her hip. She's had indications of arthritis before so I felt around her hip. She seemed okay, but when I let her down I noticed that she's walking around with her tail tucked under her.
Usually she jumps into bed with me just before I go to sleep and she didn't last night. She also jumps on the bed in the mornings when I wake, and again, she didn't. I had to search for her, and again found her up under my clothes in the closet. She hissed at me when I picked her up. This is not her normal behavior. She's also been listless since I came home. Checking around her tail (after she scratched the bejesus out of me for touching it) I found this swollen knot the size of a marble up under her tail. Something is wrong with the poor thing.
The vet nearest my house didn't open until nine and I have to be at work at 8 so I called my mom and asked if she'd take Carly to the vet. Then I had to dig around the attic to find the cat carrying case (which I never use. Hence, the attic) and coax the poor little thing inside the box. (My cat is terrified of cars and there's no human way to hold her when she's inside one. Best to have her in a carrier).
Mom just called and said that Carly (the kitty) has an infected anal gland and that the vet advised sedating her, lancing the infection, and putting her on antibiotics. He could just put her on antibiotics but it might not clear up as quickly and might get worse. I okayed the sedation and lancing. Poor thing. I feel horrible that it took me two days to figure out that there was really something wrong with her. I feel like I was an inattentive pet owner. The poor baby was in pain. Hopefully, lancing the infection will help with the pain, and the antibiotics should help. I want her perky again.
