Football Season Has Come Around Again
Sep. 3rd, 2007 03:01 pmFootball season has come around again and, as usual, it pretty much consumed my weekend.
Opening game of the year and UofA has completely messed up the parking situation. Apparently the university doesn't make enough money selling in excess of 92,000 tickets to the game. They now insist on charging for parking and reserving entire parking lots for Ivory Club members. This kinda sucks. Also, the tailgating situation has reached a slightly surreal level of absurdity with people setting up tents on the Quad the night before the game and people now setting up big screen TVs and satellite dishes with generators up on the Quad. Gone are the days when tailgating remotely resembled having a picnic.
We sort of laugh and say that clearly we don't have the stamina or determination to tailgate that spectacularly. However, due to the parking situation we did leave home at 8:30 am for a 6pm game. We ended up spending most of the morning in my nephew's dorm room... said nephew must have spent every dime he made working this summer on the 52" plasma screen (complete with integral DVR) that he has in his dorm room... beats to hell the miniscule B&W I had in my dorm room back in the dark ages. We then spent the afternoon at a party (thankfully air conditioned!) at an business partner of my B.I.L.'s whose daughter goes to the university and whose apartment was a couple of blocks from the stadium, making the party an odd mix of adults and college students.
... And when did college girls decide that baby doll dresses are for running around just shy of being naked? They could cut to the chase and just go to the game in bikinis... that might cover more.
( Read more... ) for all the copious whining of ESPN and naysayers, I think the Bama Nation is happy. (ESPN still likes to pretend that we were nuts to get rid of Shula, but, dudes, it was painfully clear that Shula simply was not a good coach and that UofA wasn't nuts to determine that he was never going to grow into the coach we need. It was the right move to change coaches. Of that I have little doubt, even if we have a losing season.)
Speaking of coaches in a hot seat . . .
Jeebus. Poor Michigan. That's one great big ouch! That was just... ouch. They had their 5th ranked heads handed to them by a 1A school. That coach has a lot of really tough questions to answer. On the other hand, I'm not going to pretend to pity Notre Dame. I was rooting for Georgia Tech all the way and was damned happy that GT gave ND a spanking.
After returning from the game, I've pretty much been laziness personified and haven't done nearly as much writing on my Seasonal Spuffy story as I had intended. (Originally I had scheduled to be finished with the first draft by now. Unfortunately... nope. I did sorta/kinda decide how I'm going to handle the ending of the story so I have hopes of completing it soon).
Hope everyone had a nice Labor Day weekend and hope that everyone who went to Dragon Con has had a great time.
Roll Tide.
