Another Day Another Poll
Nov. 2nd, 2008 11:16 amAnother day another poll... but this time and entirely different kind:
Who's No. 1? Tide or Tech?
The top spot in the BCS rankings is officially up for grabs.
Texas Tech's 39-33 upset of No.1 Texas on Saturday night assures a new team atop the BCS.
At least in the computer rankings, it's expected to be Alabama.
"I think Texas Tech might jump over Penn State in one or two computers but probably won't jump over Alabama in any computers," said Brad Edwards, a researcher for ESPN.
Alabama was ranked second, one spot ahead of Penn State, in five of six computer polls last week.
As for the human polls ... it's anyone's guess. Texas Tech would likely have to leapfrog Alabama in both the ESPN/USA Today (coaches) poll and the Harris Interactive poll to claim the BCS No.1.
Because the human voters have yet to chime in, neither Edwards nor Colley Matrix developer Wes Colley said they could guess how the BCS rankings will look when they're released today.
The AP Top 25 doesn't figure in the BCS formula, but a survey of AP voters before the game showed just how perplexed voters felt at the prospect of a Texas Tech victory.
"I would imagine I'd have to vote Alabama No.1," said Maurice Patton of The Tennessean. "I can't imagine jumping (Texas) Tech from eighth, where I had them in my vote, to first, and I can't imagine jumping an idle Penn State from third to first."
Had Penn State not had an off week and not played, I'd bet that Penn would have jumped us... which would have been okay. I'm not at all sure that we even want to be No. 1 as that position seems cursed and we're playing LSU next week. Honestly, we just want to beat LSU (and Auburn) which would guarentee us a berth in the SEC championship game. And, since Florida beat the snot out of Georgia this week, it's pretty much guarenteed that Florida will be in the SEC championship. So, truly, we cannot look beyond LSU and, after that, beyond Florida to look to what could, might, maybe, if everything went perfectly down the road.
On the up side, it's all gravy here. We truly did not expect to be this far. Optimistic pre-season predictions were that we might pull out an 8-4 season and we've already exceeded that. So anything beyond this is awesome. It's way too soon (and too damn intimidating) to think beyond that.
