shipperx: (Farscape - Why So Difficult)
So there's a possibility that my home computer is mostly dead.

Last night I was hit by some malware Trojan that Mcafee claimed to have taken care of but... erm... not so much.  Everything went kerbloey and blue screen of death.

In fact it was blue screen of death multiple times, with it saying that there were problems with my hard drive.

After much anguish and effort I finally got it to boot in safe mode and backdoored my way onto the internet to hit the TrendMicro site which ran a scan of my computer and cleaned the trojan and two other something or others.  A second scan produced no further viruses, but -- at least in safe mode -- the majority of my programs were gone including the ability to run scan disk.  (I went to bed between first scan and second.  I heard the second 'ding' its completion at 3 am)

So at that point managed to backdoor my way to Mcafee to run it's virtual technition and it did finally cause my firewall to go up again, and at that point it was 3: 30 am or so, so I closed the computer and hoped for the best.

Heading home I'll see if the "OMG! You're hard drive is damaged!" was part of the trojan or was real. And I guess I'll discover what was and was not lost in the process.

I'm not especially hopeful, but ::fingers crossed:: maybe it's not actually hovering near death.   If I can't make it work, I'll send it out to a tech tomorrow to check to see if anything can be done for the old thing.

It is, unfortunately, old enough that I take warnings of "OMG! You're hard drive isn't working properly!" seriously. :(
