shipperx: (Crichton - Still Have My Dignity)
So The Daily Show aired this quote from FOX (which I had read/heard before):

DR. BEN CARSON (10/9/2013): You know, Vladimir Lenin, one of the founders of socialism and Communism, he said socialized medicine is the keystone of the arch to the socialist state. In other words, you gotta get the socialized medicine as the foundation because it gives you control of the people.

So, sure the thought skittered across my consciousness that socialism =/= communism. And yes, I know that Lenin never made such a quote. And yet, what my mind most dwelt upon was:

Err... your metaphor makes no sense.

1) A keystone is not the first thing installed. It is, in fact, the very last part of an arch to be installed. It's what stabilizes the arch so that the downward forces are diverted to opposing sides... which is what allows for there to be open space beneath the arch... which was the purpose of the invention of the keystone in the first place...

2) A keystone is in no way related to a foundation... which is something entirely different.

I probably wasn't supposed to be diverted into thinking about architecture or metaphor fail was I? :)

(And kudos to John Stewart who also caught onto the metaphor fail:

Stewart: I don't want to nitpick the doctor here, but historically, Vladimir Lenin never actually said that. It's a made-up quote. And architecturally, the keystone and the foundation are two different things. One's at the bottom, and the other... doesn't matter. The point is, grammatically, the sentence was flawless. )
