Mad Men:
Don really hasn't got his mojo back, has he? When the nurse next door said that of course he had noticed her, I was actually inclined to believe him that he hadn't. And Marketing Research lady said that no one liked to think they were a 'type' even as she diagnosed him as one. And then I must point out that Don of two years ago would not have had sex with his secretary. He kept that stuff separate from the office and it will be awkward. Not only does he depend on his secretary to take care of his real life details, the secretary knows his business. If he goes out with anyone else, she'll know, and that will be (again) awkward. Don knows this and yet he just couldn't stop himself. I think we're see him transitioning from new hot stud to 'one of the bosses'. I noticed that the younger guys were now treating him as an old fogey calling his drinking and heading hom "pathetic". Ah, Don, you're growing older and self-destruction is never going to look prettier than it did yesterday.
I worried that Roger might have another heart attack.
Poor Sally. Really, this child breaks my heart. And there is Glenn... still creepy after all this time. So, I gather that Glenn broke into the Draper home and trashed the place (but specifically NOT Sally's room) because she had expressed a hatred of the place and that she didn't like living there. Glenn told her that one day her 'parents' would decide to move so in his creepy way, I think he was egging that along... for her. Poor Sally. She's going to be a wild child very, very soon.
Finally, I take it that Peggy decided that she didn't want to marry her current boyfriend because the advice given to her was that if she wanted to marry the guy, don't do anything. He wouldn't respect her if she slept with him. If she didn't want to marry him 'don't be a tease'. So we see her in bed with him at the end, so I'm gathering she thinks he's not for the long haul (which looks like a wise idea to me. I wasn't impressed with him).
True Blood:
Favorite lines: "A vampire burrito", "I didn't think I was smart enough to get depressed" and "eat my biscuits."
As to the episode. I've somewhat concluded that other than Jessica and possibly Pam, none of the TB vampires has any great hold on my heart. I can be entertained -- or not -- by them in any given episode, but there's no great affection for any of them in particular (other than Jessica). Usually when I say that I 'love' one of them, it's primarily in the sense that they have amused me this episode.
In that light, I kind of 'love' the King. I don't really give a rats ass if he's staked tomorrow, but as a Big Bad, he's fun. Definitely more versatile (and thus entertaining) than Maryanne. And he keeps the story going in a bunch of different ways. I approve of him as a season villain. (And lol'd at the 'air kiss' between him and the queen at their 'wedding'. )
As for Eric, I'm a bit 'meh' on him this week. He can at times he interesting, but I've always been a bit curiously detached from him. It's sort of the way that I reacted to BSG's Starbuck. I know I'm supposed to be overwhelmed by the starpower but I just tend to roll along without any great love of the character. Why I feel so detached, I don't really know. I just haven't felt inspired to any great degree of affection or admiration. He's cute and wears a tight shirt well. He can at times be entertaining and I enjoyed his telling Sookie to shut up last week. He isn't without his good points, but overall... I just haven't got the love for him that most of fandom does (I'm still trying to get through Book 4 of the Sookie Stackhouse mysteries but egads the dialog in that book reeks). So, anyway, Eric didn't do a great deal for me one way of the other in this ep. He was primarly jus sort of there.
Bill/Sookie, I do enjoy mocking Sookie's blind, naive devotion to someone that within the show she's known for about six weeks! Boy, shemisplaces a lot of faith in Bill. I am curious how the show is going to proceed here. I know that they toned down the book where, though I haven't read it, I gather that Bill more or less raped her. I'm actually glad that they didn't go that route because, honestly, there's enough violence in True Blood-land without going there. So, his nearly killing her by drinking so much from her worked well enough for me. I know there will be screams of white washing and Bill-propping and... I cannot disagree. It does seem like they've kept Bill from descending to quite the same depths (or, I'm guessing, Eric from ascending to quite the same heights) of the books. But as I've never read any of the books (except half of Book 4 and thus far... I'm underwhelmed) that doesn't matter much to me. True Blood has always been an odd vampire story for me as it's the vampire story where I haven't much cared for the vampires (other than Jessica).
Speaking of (in a very round about way), I was amused by Hoyte's situation of picking up a girlfriend unintentionally. Maybe it's a hold over from The Big Bang Theory where I really liked this actress as Wolowitz's girlfriend, but Summer actually somewhat amuses me as a Jessica rival. I suspect that Summer is hell on wheels if challenged, and should not be underestimated. I also suspect her overt sweetness and light will drive Jessica nuts. I'm realtively certain that my heart will be with Jessica in this matter as she's the one with a crap load of crap on her shoulders, but I can appreciate where Summer will hit on all manner of Jessica insecurities. Now, Hoyt, don't break Jessica's heart!
Lorena's death was not unwelcome. She annoyed the crap out of me. Still, her death was gross.
Debbie Pelt is also off the skank-o-meter charts.
I'm glad that Tara found her spine again. I think her assuming that Bill was dead is a big-ol' red flag that FRANKLIN MOTT IS NOT DEAD! See, Tara, you should have chopped off his head! Franklin is so coming back.
And I must say that I wouldn't be at all against an Alcide/Tara hook-up while having to face down two crazies in the form of Franklin and Debbie. Alcide/Tara would be pretty together.
I love Sam. Don't really give a flying flip about his current plot. But he's one of the few genuinely decent guys on the show so I have a soft spot for him despite his boring side plot.
And finally, Lafayette is still more awesome than most everyone else.
All in all, True Blood has done worse in its time so I have no real complaints.
ETA:
Oh! I almost forgot Sookie's "Passion Cove" looks like Cinemax AfterDark fairyland. Seriously, could they have made it any more cheesy? It made me miss Dresden Files menacing fairyland. Really, they could have tried to make it look just a bit less soft core meets a Star Trek TNG vacation planet o' pleasure. Someone over on shapinglight's journal referred to it as Andrew's "We Are as Gods" land from BtVS, which is really funny and rather appropriate... so can Bangel boink into it?
Still, reminds me of an 80s ST:TNG pleasure planet though. :)
Also, belated reaction to Friday TV.
Friday Night Lights: Wow. Other than Billy and his tiny underwear that was depressing. They made Tim Riggins cry y'all!
Pillars of Earth: I think this series may be improving. And I like Ellen.
And as a final note, it has been bejeezus hot this weekend. Actual temp has ranged around a 100F. Heat index has been between 105F - 120F(?!). It's meltingly hot!!!!!!
