Yeah, so I got a nice little raise last year when I changed jobs... except turns out I have a shitload more taxes too. I have never paid this much in taxes (and honestly, I can't imagine that I changed tax brackets. It wasn't THAT nice of a raise.) Have taxes simply gone up 3-4%?!

I think they had -- I ended up with a smaller refund than I had expected and while I did get a raise when I came on board full time, I also had more deduction.

That's one of the things about being single. I just don't have any deductions to speak of. Just my property tax and the standard deduction.

Also, because of the job turn over, I didn't even have a 401K this year because you have to work a year to buy in and if you invest in your IRA during the meantime you can't roll that IRA over into your next 401K. I checked out investing in another IRA but it really wasn't going to help the taxes much.

Just sucked that a huge chunk of my raise just got handed over to the government.

Do you do them yourself, or have an accountant? Kathy shelled out for an accountant for the first time this year, and it made a HUGE difference, well worth the expense.

In Tennessee this year and maybe next, we get a personal deduction for state sales tax. It helped a little. Maybe Alabama has a similar deduction?
