Monday Night Ratings

Heroes won the 9 p.m. hour with a typically potent 9.7/14 in the overnights, followed by Friday Night Lights at a 5.7/10 at 10 p.m. While this was a notable improvement for Friday Night Lights over its recent Tuesday 8 p.m. telecast (4.0/ 6 in the overnights on Oct. 24), Studio 60 last Monday averaged a higher 6.3/10 in the hour. Unfortunately, good family dramas don’t always have the luxury of finding an audience.

ETA: Huh.  Looks like FNL did do better than S60 in the overnights, just not the fast nationals.  They also posted more viewers but fewer households. (Which, I guess means more people per house watched FNL).  It also bested S60 in the 18-49 demos.

NBC, which has been the home of so much bad TV for so long, can afford to carry this show a little while longer and hope it find an audience.

Really, what other drama does NBC have that is getting any critical notice?

Well, in FNL's favor it's been gaining audience (as opposed to S60's continued loss of audience), it's cheaper to produce with a cheaper cast, and it's owned by NBC/Universal whereas S60 is owned by Warner Brothers. For those reasons, they may be willing to stick with FNL just a little while longer (still, some people seem to be so resistant to the premise of the show, that I'm not sure it can ever raise its ratings high enough). Rumors are growing stronger that NBC already plans to throw in the towel with S60.

The rumors started from Foxnews, so should be taken w/ a grain of salt (opposing network posts rumors of deathknell elsewhere?)

Not only that, but I have a friend who works on S60 and says NO ONE is talking cancellation, no one is worried.

Also, S60 actually picked up better numbers last week, over previous weeks.

But, as with most rumors, it has spread and spread and spread (regardless of its origin). On top of that, no one seems surprised, which lends to the impression that its doing badly.

I'm still convince that, at the least, it will show its 13 original episodes, but I have serious doubts of (either show, actually) ever seeing a second season.

I would think one problem that FNL has, especially in that timeslot, is that people who might be drawn to the family drama aspect may also be put off by the football, and people who might be drawn to the football are watching actual football on Monday nights.

I have a sneaking suspicion that FNL is a cult audience size show on a main strem network. As much as I truly enjoy the show, I'm not convinced it can find a large enough audience to sustain it. Not every show appeals to everyone. I just don't know that the show can cut across enough borders to attract the size audience that it needs.

That said, I think it is a lovely, well produced, well written show that deserves a larger audience (even if I suspect it will never find one.)
